Michael Kim on Lawline.com and Zappos

Program Attorney Kyle Robinson interviews Michael on what he encountered at Zappos, and how it relates to the core values practiced here at Lawline.

Lawline Job Titles

Recently Ann asked me what my official title at Lawline was. She needed the information because Ann was going to order me some business cards. I was stumped I really did not know my title; it was never something that really cared about. The one thing I knew is that day in and day out I tried making customers happy. As I paused and thought for a moment I remembered Mike [Rutledge] once called me a customer service guru, I liked it. So I told Ann to put that down as my title.

So this got me thinking how important titles can be and how they should reflect who we truly are to the company. So here is a couple I thought of for the rest of us here at Lawline.

David S. – Fearless Leader
This one does not need much of an explanation. Dave is not scared to trust us to do our thing, he does not feel the need to micro manage which allows the company to grow naturally and create a great working environment.

Here's my business card. Customer Service Guru

Jeff R. – Safety Net/Ironman
When something goes wrong we usually take a walk to Jeff’s room. I think this is why he put himself in the back corner to make it a little harder for us to interrupt him; he has to get work done sometime! No but seriously Jeff helps every department run as smooth as possible. Second part of Jeff’s title is for his recent participation in the Ironman race. That stuffs for superheroes and Jeff deserve that badge of honor.

Todd M. – The Fixer
Whether it is the CRM, Internet or a random glitch Todd has got a fix. So many times I walk into Todd’s room and explain an issue and the next thing I hear from Todd is I found it [the issue]! Granted he does break some things but that what’s great about Todd he has fixes for those too!

Christie L. – Papa Da Rappa
Christie shares this title with a very old PlayStation game. Why does Christie get this name? The first reason is obvious she raps. Reading her lyrics since I started working here has been awesome. The second reason is like the PlayStation game she has been around forever. Christie knows just about every in and out of every aspect of Lawline. She was here when the skeletons for the site were built so of course she has a master key.

Michael S. – Training
I am not completely sure where it came from. I am sure there was a joke at some point but the name stuck. While it may have begun as a joke it definitely rings truth. Mike is a loud guy; his phone conversation can be heard from down the hall. Also his encouragement can be heard, Mike celebrates every positive thing the people around him to. I must have heard “That was awesome bro” a thousand times while sitting in the office next to Mike. He is the sales team biggest cheerleader. The positive reinforcement from his jokes reminds you what you should be doing and before you know it you just got trained.

Kyle R. – Omnipresence
More of a state of being than a title but this truly personifies Kyle. I enjoyed Lawline courses before Kyle was here but since Kyle got here I had had the need to put courses down on my calendar because many of the courses he brings to us are something I want to learn about. While booking awesome courses Kyle finds the time to joke with everyone in the office. From making fun of my lateness or making rap videos, Kyle makes his presence felt. This makes him a centerpiece at the Lawline table.

There are definitely more titles but I am going to save those for the next post.

AUGUST CORE VALUES – OPTIMISM – ANN

Though Ann has only been at Lawline for about a month, it is already hard to imagine the office without her. Immediately, she has made her presence felt with her high energy, passionate spirit, and ever-present optimism.

In her first few days Ann had been training in customer service, as all Lawline members take part of. Within her first few training sessions, without any background knowledge of our backend system, Ann literally exclaimed (as witnessed by Chris): “I want to take one, Lawline doesn’t hire sissies!”

Later that day, her optimism carried through on her first customer call: a password reset (not a bad first call to get!). End result: success!

Later that day in the halls, she was overheard saying “see I told you I had it!”

Every day we enter the office Ann greets us with a smile. She is always ready to tackle any task head on with an optimistic outlook, regardless of what it is, just as she did with her first customer service call.

August Core Values – Brandon Glantz – HELPING OTHERS

Taking time to helps others describes Brandon Glantz and his contributions to Lawline.com and our Core Values to a T. From day one, Brandon has gone beyond his original Legal Intern job duties to make sure he assisted the Production team in any way necessary. If there was a problem or issue, you could be assured that Brandon would either know the answer or help you find it.

This was best exemplified when Micah went on vacation and Brandon eagerly stepped in to fill his shoes without even being asked. This core value also came through at our live event series, where Brandon was often running around with the microphone to make sure every audience question was captured without any delay.  As a result of his ability to extend himself throughout the department and the great quality of his work product, he receives more and more responsibility on a daily basis.  We are looking forward to him staying with the company in the Fall semester and are confident that he will continue to help his fellow team members with whatever is needed.

August Core Values- Sean Barr – SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

“Before I evaluate today, huge CONGRATULATIONS to Sean for coming up big with his first sale as a Lawline employee as well as the first sale in the VA Market.  Keep up the hard work Sean! “

-Sales Recap, August 10.

Though still new to the team, Sean has shown a great ability to be quick on his feet, stay agile, and find creative ways to get the job done.

Sean has overcome a few obstacles – learning the sales routine and product, developing his pitch, and dealing with a multitude of technical glitches that seemed to magnate to his accounts early on. Regardless, Sean continued to seek ways to get the job done.

For example, Sean kept his appointments in-line despite unexplained malfunctions  with his Google calendar. With thousands of leads to keep track of, this is a key tool for organization. He also has kept his call-volume high throughout his CRM click-through malfunctions, hitting his goal daily. As a result, sales have picked up quick for Sean the past few weeks as he has built his pipeline in our upcoming markets.

Though still new to the CLE selling game, Sean has quickly shown he has the ability to come up with creative ways to reach his goals. Great things await Sean as he continues to prove his ability to think creatively and optimistically.

August Core Values – Michael Kim – ACTIVELY LEARNING

What happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas.

Recently Michael Kim set out on vacation to celebrate a good friend’s bachelor’s party in Las Vegas. Normally, when taking a vacation, especially to Vegas, it is rare to find someone willing to work for the company. Not MK. Instead of hitting the slots, Michael hopped into a van and headed over to Zappos’ headquarters to find out how to better integrate our Core Values into our company culture.

During his visit, Michael was able to interact with different employees to see how Zappos built a company around the culture.  Making sure that everyone from Lawline would be able to gain from his amazing experience, Michael made for us a MK Slice Production original. The video showed his journey from the plane flight over, to interviews with his car driver, and finally the tour of the headquarters.

There was not one point in the video where a smile was missed. Michael brought with him questions asked from people in the Lawline office to see how exactly each employee feels about their every day experiences at Zappos. The common theme was that everyone loved coming to work and enjoyed being part of a company built on culture.

Michael started his presentation by asking around the room where people would buy their shoes? Most said in a store nearby. After the presentation, we were all able to see how creating a culture in a company can turn a big box industry into an online enterprise “Delivering WOW Through Service.”

August Core Values – Kyle Robinson – DRIVE

Kyle has a strong passionate drive to find the most logical approach to turn every potential problem into an opportunity. He has a unique ability never to dwell on the downside of a challenge, he laughs good heartedly at any problem and rolls up his sleeves to solve it. His drive is evident in every program he books as he constantly manages to make every program top notch; handling rescheduling, calling new faculty, and efficiently producing the best content for our site.

A fantastic example, though certainly only one of many, is his recent interview with a phenomenal presenter who was a bit camera shy her first time in the studio. Kyle took the initiative to prepare and facilitate a new program where he would interview the faculty member. Kyle took charge to direct the program and engage the lecturer on her presentation. The course was a tremendous success and the interview format was flawless. The presenter was put at ease and the conversation flowed naturally from one section to the next. The spirited participation, and Kyle’s intense ability to approach any challenge with a smile on his face, a joke in his heart and a critical eye certainly make him a valuable team member that Lawline.com would not be the same without.

Culture and Experience – Interns 2011

Summer 2011 has come and gone, and so have our Interns for this year. All four of them were able to exemplify our Core Values and carry them out on an every day basis. Working with students is one of my favorite parts of my job because I am able to share knowledge with people who have yet to experience what I have. Mentoring our interns and providing them with a great learning experience is our goal for every internship program.

Whether they are assisting our customers, preparing course materials, maintaining relationships with faculty, creating new courses, or assisting with recruitment, all interns are able to learn through real life experience. We would not have it any other way.

Lawline’s Internship Program normally requires a minimum of 20 hours per week for one reason: we want to make sure we are able to give this student enough responsibility that their job will be an important part of our company. Anything less than 20 hours can sometimes result in a person not being her often enough to depend on to complete assignments on a regular basis.

Our four interns from Summer 2011 (Brett, Brandon, Nadia, and Matt) share their experiences in the following videos. Feel free to check out what they thought of Lawline!

Matt Gold – Human Resource Internship Program – Florida State University

Nadia Tariq – Production Department Internship Program – Brooklyn Law School

Brandon Glantz and Brett Hirsch – Content Development Internship Program – Cardozo Law School and New York Law School

Five Take Aways from my Entrepreneurial Internship at Lawline

After Matt Gold has completed his second summer here at Lawline, he wishes to share 5 tips for any individual looking to actively learn on what is needed to maximize your experience at a company.

Five Take Aways from my Entrepreneurial Internship at Lawline

By Matt Gold

This summer marked my second year interning at Lawline, where the entrepreneurial atmosphere has provided me with great opportunity for personal and professional growth. The hands-on experience I have gained at this small, tight-knit organization is something a larger company would not have offered. Here are five of the most import things I have learned about what it takes to be a successful intern in an entrepreneurial organization experiencing rapid growth.

1. Work Hard

While this may sound obvious I can’t stress enough how important working hard, very hard is. If you are fortunate enough to intern for a growing business you will likely find that there is never a shortage of work that needs to be done. Show initiative and volunteer for new assignments. Be prepared to eat lunch at your desk. Your assistance and positive attitude will be appreciated by management. Also, handling various assignments exposes you to diverse job experiences.  The level of new skills and knowledge you take away from an internship will be directly proportionate to the range of tasks you perform and the effort you put in.

2. Be Flexible and Resourceful

Interning at Lawline has sharpened my time and project management skills.  Entrepreneurial businesses, like Lawline, that are experiencing rapid growth and opportunity, are also likely facing new challenges that come along with entering unchartered territory. Therefore they probably don’t have a “how to” manual for every task they assign to you.  Be prepared to work on tasks that have never been done before and complement that with the self-discipline required to complete assignments on time. I have had to learn how to independently pace myself and determine the best time schedule especially when working on multiple projects. It can be challenging, but has pushed me to be independent, creative and strategic.

3. Volunteer to write an article or report

Find or volunteer for an assignment that provides you with a physical take away; something you can add to your portfolio. I was given an assignment to write an article for our Learn.Lawline Learning Blog.  Marketing and online communication is vital to Lawline’s success in communicating with existing clients and attracting new ones. My writing assignment required me to think and write like a marketing professional. I wrote the copy in a bulleted fashion that makes it easier for busy people to read. I also embedded hyperlinks to online videos that emphasized my points and showcased Lawline course products. The article is now posted online at http://learn.lawline.com/2011/06/getting-started-with-social-media-five-things-lawyers-need-to-know/ and I have added it to my portfolio.

4. Adhere to Lawline’s Core Values

  • Actively learning
  • Seeking creative solutions
  • Taking time to help others
  • Exuding optimism
  • Driven to find a better way

Lawline’s Core Values shape the culture and define the character of our organization. Our core values are demonstrated not only in the work place but also in our everyday lives. The core value that I hold dearest to myself is exuding optimism. It is extremely important to come into work each day with a smile on your face. As the old saying goes, smiles are contagious. I can say with confidence that having an optimistic approach to your work will make you a much more successful employee. This approach has helped me overcome many obstacles when adversity inevitably arises. Of course in order to honor the shared core values it is essential you work in a company that reflects your own values. Fortunately Lawline’s values and mine are well matched. I believe the success and job satisfaction I have experienced at Lawline is directly connected to my passion for the company mission and its core values.

5. Be a Team Player and  find a  Mentor/Coach

I enjoy sports and have experienced the importance of team work through my participation in them. Working at Lawline has also allowed me to be part of team. The Lawline team includes everyone from the interns to the CEO. All of us are passionate about our work and strive for success. Success can be measured many ways but includes delivering excellent customer service and creating efficient systems that build our business.  This team oriented, inclusive atmosphere provides daily interaction with top management. I have gained so much from observing and interfacing with these dynamic leaders, especially my direct supervisor Frank Furbacher. I admire Frank’s work ethic and his drive to continually try new approaches to achieve goals. I appreciate the fact that that just like a great coach, Frank has trained me to perform better and has taught me many new skills. I am also thankful for his support and guidance. We all need the encouragement of others to do things we’ve never done before.

I don’t think a larger company would have given me the hands-on experience that I’ve gained from interning at Lawline. Furthermore, the real-world experience has given me a chance to apply things I have learned from my professors and text books. I will take this knowledge with me back to college and beyond.

MK Slice Goes on a Zappos Tour!

About a month ago, I had the privilege of visiting the Zappos headquarters in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was truly amazing to learn more about a company that Lawline respects and admires for its dedication to customer service and its core values. I had a lot of fun – I recommend anyone going out to Las Vegas to book a free tour!

I made a video of my experience with the hope that it would inspire us to come up with new ideas on how to help Lawline evolve into a better organization. We should realize that each one of us plays an influential role in developing our company culture, enhancing our work environment, and contributing to Lawline’s success. Enjoy the clip!
