Dance Away Negativity

This Halloween Monday, Luis showed us a video on how one can bounce back from scary moments in life.

Luis: “One of the things that matters most to me is knowing how to deal with rejection. It is very important to try to see every rejection or setback as an opportunity to create something bigger than you originally thought. I thought back on the people that dealt with some major setbacks and Ney Melo. His story should serve an example that these setbacks in life are sometimes opportunities to live happier than before.”

How Great You Are!

This Friday morning, Gamal got everyone pumped up today.

Gamal: “Growing up I was an athlete, so inspirational & motivational quotes and speeches I lived by. Some people can hear a quote and disregard it and others actually take it to heart and run with it. Those quotes not only allowed me to succeed in sports but also in my everyday view on life. Nothing in life is just given to you. Having the attitude that you’re willing to fight and work extremely hard to become great distinguishes you from the rest. So everyday I try to find different ways to show the world how Great I am.”

Shushh….Secrets to Success

Yesterday on a rainy but cheery Thursday, Mike S. aka TT shared the secrets of success.

Why do people succeed? Is it because they’re smart? Or are they just lucky? Neither. Analyst Richard St. John condenses years of interviews into a slideshow on the real secrets of success. Mike really thinks this applies mainly to Sales, but also believes this can be true for anybody working hard at what they want…
Whether you’re working to keep customers happy (Customer Service), working to keep customers (Retention) or whether your just trying to gain some new customers (Sales/Marketing), the more you want something and the harder you work towards it are the best ways to achieve it, and to ULTIMATELY be successful!!

A Journey to the Marathon – A Defining Moment

legs-running

Kyle and I had an 18 mile run this past Sunday. It was actually a pretty cool route that I mapped out. We went through downtown Brooklyn over the Manhattan Bridge up to Delancy street and then made a right towards the Williamsburg Bridge and ran straight to the river. We ran up the FDR drive on the river until 34th street. And then we ran up to the 59th Street bridge.

Around the 9 mile mark at 42nd Street is where it happened. It was the same thing that happened to me on the Thursday before but the difference was I was only running a total of 9 miles. All of my sudden my hamstring and gluts got so tight I could barely move my legs. I stopped and stretched a few times but it was not getting much better.  We stopped at a bodega and bought Gatorade, banana, and Advil. I took all three. At that point we decide to walk about 10 blocks to the the bridge.

In my head I was saying to myself I have trained a lot. I do not want to injure myself. 9 miles is good. I want to set up this upcoming week of 39 miles with success. So I should stop. Call it a day. Then, I started thinking instead of taking the 59th street bridge and going into Queens which is a harder route, I should just go back the way we came. Kyle was saying to me I can do it. I agreed, but thought I might be setting myself up for failure by trying to run uphill on the bridge with my legs in the condition they were in. All of a sudden he said, “ok then lets just go back the way we came.”

As soon as he said that it was like a switch flipped in my head. I said to him, “no I am running up the bridge.” I told him I am going to finish our 18 mile route through Queens no matter how long it takes. I thought back to the Arnold Schwarzenegger video where he asked the guy why he is lifting weights. The guy said, “I think, maybe….” and Arnold said to sit back down because with that mind set he will be a loser. He said he there is NO MAYBE… you have to get up and say, “I want be a champion and I will do whatever it takes to be a champion.”

So for the next 9 miles I pushed through it. I stopped every 2 miles or so to stretch and keep my muscles loose. I ran through places of Queens and Brooklyn I never saw before. I had a team mate and I could not quit on him. I pushed through pain and tightness that the old me would have stopped many times over. We took our energy gels and just kept going through.

The best part was the last two miles I got an energy surge and we increased our speed and kept it going. We did something that will sound sort of nerdy but it helped immensely. We kept quoting Arnold’s video and the How Bad do you Want Success motivational video. We were screaming them to each other as others were looking at us as we ran by them.

This literally went on the entire two last miles. As I finished I got two feelings. One I got a sense on how it would feel at the end of the marathon. You put your all in and you reach the goal.  Second, if there is a set back like this on the day of the marathon I will be able to finish it. It might take me a bit longer but I will finish no matter what. And of course always bring Advil!  Lastly, I learned that I will be able to achieve anything I want as long as I think like a champion which leads to the right mindset to see it through.

Human Knot

On Tuesday morning, Chris D. got everyone in a knot…literally.

Unless you are a eagle scout you know maybe three knots to build. Yesterday, Chris had Lawline built into a human knot! He tied the knot but each knots members had  to untie themselves to make a circle. This team building exercise helped us all in areas of team work and leadership.
What we learned was that it is just as hard to lead as it is to follow…this activity put this idea to the test.

The Lawline pie is made up of many slices but no ever wants just to have one slice, you always want all of the pie!

Taking Imagination Seriously

This Tuesday Morning, I presented a video on Janet Echelman.

What is very inspiring about this video is the multiple use of our core values we believe here at Lawline.com. It shows her displaying creative solutions, then she is actively learning as well as driven to be better . With patience and research, she mastered a new form of art that she has never done before.
Her journey through her career reminded me of Lawline.com’s own journey. Whenever we are presented with new situations, we meet it head on ready to solve it. Even if we never did a certain skill before, we learn it and come back better & smarter than before as a team.

Are You Here or Are You There?

This Monday morning, Dave presented an awesome video about Lawline.com.
The most powerful way to achieve your goals is to tell the story as if you reach the goal and how you got there. Below is our story.

It Gets Better

On Friday, Christie presented a video on a movement that Dan Savage started called It Gets Better. It showed the power of one positive message through YouTube. From one video, it became a nationwide project spreading support to those who felt alone or bullied for being different.

Don’t be afraid to be who are you.

One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure

Today in our AM Huddle, one message from Corey’s presentation was similar to an old saying: “A poor man does not learn from his mistakes. A good man does learn from his mistakes. A wise man learns from the mistakes of others.”

Below is a video by Ian Ritchie, where he talks about the evolution of the internet and how he missed out on the chance to team up with Tim Berners Lee to develop the World Wide Web. The whole message is essentially on making sure to give things a chance and think outside the box, because you never know when a big opportunity might come your way. Dismissing someone as crazy and dismissing their ideas is only going to limit your success. Sometimes you have to be believe in someone else before you can believe in yourself. Take a leap of faith.

How Bad Do You Want to Be Successful?

A shout out to Yury from LegalHelp.org for sharing this video with me.  Below are two quotes that I really liked around 3 minutes into it.

Most of you say you want to be successful but you do not want it bad you just kind of want it. You do not want it as much you want to party or be cool. You do want to be successful as much as you want to sleep. Some of you love sleep more then you love success. And I am here to tell you today if you are going to be successful you have to be willing to give up sleep. If you want to be successful you might have to stay up three days in a row because if you go to sleep you might miss the opportunity to be successful…

When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breath then you will be successful. If you have asthma and you have a shortness of breath the only thing you care about it trying to breath. You dont care about basketball, tv, a party, friends, the only thing you care about is getting fresh air. When you get to the point when you want to be successful as bad as you want to breath then you will be successful.

After I put this post live Yury emailed the below quote which sums of modern society perfectly.

The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, answered “Man. Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”

October Spotlight: Production Dept. – DRIVE

  • 42 programs scheduled through September.
  • 37 booked so far in October.
  • Webcams, webcasts, live programs, content partnerships, CPE programs, interview programs, current event programs.
  • 600+ courses live on the website.

The list goes on…

Kyle, in his weekly review, gave an insightful quotation:

No one can whistle a symphony. It takes a whole orchestra to play it.

- H.E. Luccock

Truly, no staff can be found working harder. From before the sun rises, to after it sets, to Saturdays and Sundays, there is always someone in production making Lawline grow. The department exudes everything Lawline needs to succeed and continue its mission of being the leader in continuing education.

October Spotlight: Sal – OPTIMISM

With the CLE industry as competitive as it is, having customers come return and creating loyalty is a large task. Recently, Lawline.com sought a special individual to take on the responsibility. After months of search, Lawline.com found its person: Sal.

In his initial “test day,” Sal reached a customer that was upset with the service (yes, it happens every once in a while). This was the perfect test to see how he would react. He could have got nervous, angry, or afraid and he could have reacted in many ways of which, on an average case, would be a normal reaction.

Sal, however, apologized to the customer, said he would do everything to appease him, and followed through. After the conversation, when asked about the experience, Sal smiled and said “I’m glad I could help appease him and it’ll help me for next time as well.”

That optimism is truly something rare.

October Spotlight: Trisha – HELPING OTHERS

Recently, Patricia began her internship at a local law office. Lucky for Lawline, that office happened to be one room over from her Lawline desk! The question was, would Lawline be able to refrain from asking for her assistance? The temptation seemed great.

However, Trish has been actively participating in all her days at the law office with Lawline. In any downtime or between work, she volunteered to take on extra work. When CS or new hires had questions, Trish answered them. When Ann needs to leave the office, Trish is there. Also, she still attends every AM Huddle.

When she isn’t working at the law firm, working at Lawline, or helping out otherwise, can be found studying and finishing her class work.

Despite all her responsibilities, Trish has never once been too busy to help another.

October Spotlight: Gamal – SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

In the AM Huddle, there was a recent presentation featured Arnold Schwarzeneggar. In the video, Arnold gave across one message:

In life, there is no maybe. You have to want to achieve, and you have to take action.

With any motivation clip, it hit homes with others, and some, not so much. Certainly, Gamal took this message home and has acted upon his wants to create unique solutions. He has actively expanded his role, on his own, in a number of ways.

First, Gamal volunteered  to take on weekend and off-hours customer service. He also began to propose marketing initiatives and create outlines of potential benefits for the company outside of his current role. This was in addition to greater initiatives in sales, in which put together nightly recaps and frequent meeting topics. None of this was asked, but because there was a real need laying present in the organization, Gamal has not only begun to define it, he has actively stood up and sough a solution: his own actions.

October Spotlight: Mike R. – ACTIVELY LEARNING

Recently, Lawline announced its scholarship program, in which employees would be reimbursed to a certain amount for learning related activities. In any change or movement, it always takes a leader to get the process started. Mike R. is that leader.

Immediately, Michael has taken advantage of office incentives by taking technical courses like PHP and learning more about AdWords. Type something that has to do with CLE into Google, and you’ll see Lawline there… that’s all Mike’s learning!

In addition the PHP class is an extension of what Mike has already taught himself with HTML. Truly, Mike has become one of the most versatile members of the organization through his never ending quest to learn.

Last, he has even taken it with him on the weekends. Michael not only motivates himself to learn and increase his knowledge and skills but he also motivates others. Currently he is tutoring students on Saturdays in Brooklyn.

Michael is always actively learning 7 days a week and continues to be a learning inspiration.

You Say Tomato…

In today’s huddle, Robert pointed out there are many options to a situation.

The best way to think about a solution to a problem is not only to think about the logical solutions but to think of the uncharacteristic ways that the problem can be solved.  There are many different ways to think about everything that we are surrounded by and there is no set way that is right and one that is wrong.  The best way to look at the world is to look at different perspectives and to see what other viewpoints that you are missing out on.

Tossing for Answers

On this fine Monday morning, Patricia tossed a ball at her coworkers!

However there was a fun purpose behind it. On the ball were many random questions. Once a circle was formed, each person got a chance to toss the ball to a person in the circle. When someone catches the ball,  they must answer the question where ever their right thumb lands on. The point to this exercise was to get to know more about each other. For example, we learned how some would ward off zombies, what someone’s favorite childhood smell was, and what one person strongly believed in. The answers were unique and interesting.

Getting to know more about our great team members was an awesome and fun start to this week.

Thinking outside the (elevator) box

For Fun Friday, Anna showed us how to literally think outside an elevator box.

We used the exercise of the “Pokey Elevators” as an entry into discussing better ways to think of Creative Solutions. From the Elevators Case Study, we learned that sometimes problems are not what they appear to be at first thought, and that sometimes coming up with an answer to a problem requires us to get to the deeper issues. What you need to do is think about the problems, not just the solutions, in a novel and creative way. We saw that although people might be complaining about how slow elevators are, in reality the problem is that they are just bored while they wait, a completely different problem, that has a much easier solution. We finished with some tips on Creative Thinking- including turning a problem “upside down”, “working backwards” from a goal, “inviting randomness” into your thought process and of course, taking a nice, long, piping hot shower.

The Spinach Stories

This Thursday, Frank made us think about performing above and beyond. The Spinach Story comes from sales consultant and speaker, Jack Daly. It is his way of telling groups he speaks to about going above and beyond the normal customer service and care that is expected.

In our morning meeting today employees viewed the video and broke up into groups of 4. Each group discussed for ten minutes ways in which they or their departments have come up with spinach stories over the last few months.

We came back and shared all of our experiences and ideas together, prompting many employees and managers to be surprised by how many great Spinach Stories we had to share. It is always great to take a few minutes out, hear from your employees how they have gone above and beyond, and then hear new ideas they can put into action today!

“Go for No!”

This Wednesday, Brandon taught us in our morning meeting a new strategy of Richard Felton’s “Go for No!” After briefly sharing with everyone how he learnt about the Go for No philosophy, he showed a part of the Richard’s video which was taken from the first chapter of the book.

Richard’s video focuses on having personal limits and how to overcome. The rest of the presentation focuses on setting a goal on not how many people you can get to say “Yes,” but how many people you can get to say “No.” Setting a goal of No’s leads to a higher amount of Yes’s. Don’t ever stop asking until you get a No and you will eventually be getting more people to say Yes.

Please fast forward to 2:50

A Journey to the Marathon

running

To me the thought of running a marathon was always so foreign. Only a certain type of person does it. Right?  Not me. Never. Why would I want to anyway, it is really really long?  Well that is the point, isn’t it? To challenge yourself to do something that is so impossible and seems so difficult.  To know if you can accomplish this you can set your mind to accomplish anything.  Notice how I wrote mind and not body.  While it is your body that is being conditioned it is your mind that will see you through the 17 weeks of training.

After being inspired by Kyle who ran the NY Marathon last year for the first time, I felt the need to try the ultimate challenge as well.  Before I knew it Kyle and I were training for the Philadelphia Marathon that takes place November 20th.  I got to tell you from the first moment I was hooked.  Before we trained the furthest I ran was 6 miles and that was a stretch.  We are now in our 13th week and have run 15 miles at one time and a total distance of 237 miles.  We are in the home stretch with the longest runs coming up in the next few weeks. I will be doing several follow up posts on our progress and hope to convince Kyle to as well.  This has been one of the most inspiring things I have ever done and look forward to crossing the finish line and sharing my experience with the world.

What we Learned at the Tribal Leadership Event

Tribal_leadership2

We recently went to an event hosted by NY Enterprise Report where John King, the author of Tribal Leadership spoke about the importance of forming triads and eventually tribes in your organization.  Below is our main take away from the event.

The strongest point of his argument was how powerful a group of 3 is, and how important it is to focus on the trio when building relationships and working towards a goal. We really liked the two applications of this point both in business and in every day life.

In a work environment, getting a third person involved or an outside opinion can raise ideas that two might never have thought of in the first place.  Adding another mind has such an incredible benefit. While most people know this, meetings are generally conducted in twos. If you focus on building tight groups of 3, and then working on putting the groups of 3 to work completing tasks, they will work more efficiently and be drastically more successful.

Outside of work, the emphasis is to be the connector between worlds. If you introduce people you build your status with each of them and you support their relationship. This is something that can lead to many more relationships in general. The key here is to introduce people as often as possible, because you never know when something might come of the relationship and everyone benefits from the connection.

The talk was a ton of fun and hearing everyone’s different thoughts is a great way to preserve and enhance the ideas that were raised. One of the coolest parts of the talks is when he said these are just tools, take them and make them work for you.

Lawline 10K Runners & Walker

On Sunday October 9th, a group of Lawliners participated in the Annual 10K Community Run & Walk for Bed-Stuy Restoration Organization. The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for a good cause. Micah, MK, Kyle, Dave, & Mike R. ran while Ann showed off her speed-walking ability to the max.

Everyone finished under a hour. Micah & MK were the first two to finish, with Micah ahead by 21.691 seconds. Kyle was never far behind them. Dave & Mike R. finished strong. Ann beat all of them with her swift legs and shorter walk route. These guys ran a great race. They truly had great determination and spirit.

Even after doing a 10K, some still walked through several neighborhoods home instead of taking the subway.  Talk about road warriors!

Doing something for a community and having fun were just a great way to spend this Sunday.

Final Results
Ann         walked too fast to measure
Micah     47:14.025
MK          47:35.716
Kyle        48:58.621
Dave       51:56.833
Mike R    51:59.937

Way to go guys!!

More Lawline Titles

I promised more and finally I am delivering. In case you missed it check out my first batch of Lawline titles here.

Rob J. – Office Ninja

Rob was recently featured on the Core Values Newsletter for helping others. Just as his entry says he is everywhere. Helping people move, being a self-made IT wiz and of course making spreadsheets that make my head hurt. Yet Rob has some skills that I have no idea where he picked them up, he is a master in stealth. I cannot count the number of times where I am having conversation with Rob or I ask him a question only to turn around and notice he is no longer in the room, reappearing later after completing yet another task to help Lawline run smoothly.

Frank F. – The Set Up

If Lawline was Ocean’s Eleven Frank would be George Clooney. He watches all the angles making sure his move is precise in advancing Lawline’s goals. He knows when to help out but he also knows when to just sit back and allow someone to take charge. He enables us to contribute to this here “engine that could”.

Ken P. – The Entertainer

One look at Ken’s headshot and you will know that Ken does something on the side, he entertains. He has managed though to bring in his other career into Lawline. Ken makes us all laugh. From his George Bush Impression to his adventures in Jr. High bathrooms, told in his stand up, Ken makes sure to make all have a good time. Sometimes Ken just walks into the CS room tells a couple jokes makes us laugh and then gets right back selling CLE. He enjoys entertaining us just as much as we enjoy hearing his jokes.

If you guys notice anything title worthy from your colleagues let me know! See you guys in the next installment of Lawline titles.
