November Spotlight: Sean Barr – ACTIVELY LEARNING

A few months back, Lawline.com subscribed to the Jack Daly unlimited webinar package (you have to love those unlimited course deals). The seminars are about becoming a better sales person: creating referrals, being genuine, leading a team, what to say, when to say it, etc. For a while, the subscription to the courses went relatively unused…
Mid-month, Sean Barr was not where he wanted to be with his sales. When this happens, it is easy to be uncertain with what is happening or why there is a decrease. With someone as successful as Sean – it would be even easier to say it is just a slow start to the month, and things will pick up.

However, Sean didn’t take that attitude. When he wasn’t at the benchmark he had set for himself, he reached out to Frank to learn what more he could do. He knew he had the leads and that the sales were close, but wanted to learn how to get them on the line and close the deal. Frank led him to the Jack Daly webinars, and Sean took a course on the customer cycle and creating a referral network.
The unique thing about this one action was its spread: this specific webinar led to the rest of the team watching the same course – leading to multiple team meetings overviewing the diagrams from the course, a re-thinking of the sales process in general, plans for updates to the CRM system to integrate these ideas, and, ultimately, more success.

November Spotlight: Stephanie Paeprer – SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

We can all acknowledge that social media is an integrated part of our lives today. At the office, yes, there is always skepticism on the “productivity” related to being on Facebook, Twitter, and the like. Stephanie, however, took that notion and turned it around 180 degrees.

Stephanie Paeprer loves social media. She’s said it in her initial interview, and she has said it since. What Stephanie, did, however, was seek a creative way to integrate her passion with the needs of the company. Lawline.com has a great culture, however, there wasn’t yet a Twitter account for it. Within her first few days in the company, Stephanie created an account on Twitter for LawlineCulture and raised a significant following while still meeting all her daily goals in her role.

Her passion expanded to her creating a social networking aspect to the Lawline faculty awards (search #facultyevent2011) and added a component that took the Lawline.com culture into the event. Stephanie’s ability to integrate her passion with where Lawline.com is going and what its needs are, and being able to identify this and take action, is truly unique… plus we all love seeing the next Tweet!

November Spotlight: Jeff Fannon – HELPING OTHERS

The sales team has been watching videos by sales expert Jack Daly to get some tips on improving their technique. Jeff Fannon took Jack’s advice, decided to help others instead of just pitching them, and wound up with a sale and a great conversation.

Jeff was on the phone with an attorney, going through his normal cadence of information.  Once he struck up some interest the attorney, driving at the time, said it would be great to get an email with this information and he would take a look.

The attorney gave his email address, “DarrowDisciple221@xyz.com,” and stated the meaning behind email address was very important to him. While the attorney was explaining Jeff jumped on Google to look up the meaning behind “Darrow Disciple”. The next words out of the attorneys mouth was, “Now I’m going to quiz you…any idea what my email address is in reference to?”

Jeff replied that it had to do with the famous attorney, Clarence Darrow.  The attorney started laughing saying this truly made his day. No one ever knew the reference to it in the past!  This changed the conversation from your average sales call to a great conversation. Jeff made the attorney’s day by going above and beyond, and helped brighten his day!

November Spotlight: Micah – OPTIMISM

This one is easy. The faculty event 2012 was also a day with the opportunity of going into the history books as a result of the Occupy Wall Street movement. The night before, Mayor Bloomberg called for the removal of all protestors from Zucatti Park. The result? The leaders of the movement decided to take the protest to Union Square at 3PM.

The problem? Lawline.com’s faculty event was scheduled at the Union Square Ballroom, and the production team was scheduled to arrive at 3PM. Potentially, this was would be disastrous.

However, the event turned out to be the largest success in the three years of the Lawline.com Faculty Awards. Guests arrived safely, there was tons of energy, Awards were handed out, speeches given, and everything went to plan… better actually!

This will be a great story: even with the city falling apart around us, the event STILL got off without a hitch . . . attendance was high, and everyone loved it!

While Micah Bochart spoke, sirens blared outside, protestors were arrested, and it felt as if the city was falling apart. That didn’t stop Micah from realizing the work, hours, and fun of the event. It went off without a hitch… and some would say this optimism was the glue that kept the city together that day.

November Spotlight: David S. & Kyle – DRIVE

In early summer, David Schnurman and Kyle Robinson decided to sign up for the Philadelphia marathon. It was Kyle’s second such race and Dave’s first.

First, let’s put into perspective what it means to complete a marathon. Running a marathon means planning months in advance. It means creating a schedule and sticking to it, even when you are tired, fatigued, and worn out. It involves months of pushing yourself to the limit: running further today than yesterday, waking up before the crack of dawn to get a run in, and fitting in workouts while balancing the rest of life and managing to keep your energy high when training is absorbing so much of it. And then, of course, there is showing up race day and pounding through 26.2 miles.

Throughout the process, Dave and Kyle not only performed all of these above, but also led through pushing us as a company day in and day out. They never let the schedule deter them from their goals at Lawline – quite the contrary: their routine and structure carried into structure within the company.

That’s How the Story Goes…

During yesterday’s morning meeting, Sasha had everyone played the story game, an activity meant to wake everyone up with a few laughs and get their creative juices flowing so that everyone would be ready to seek creative solutions and find a better way throughout their day. To start, we broke up into four groups of five, and on a sheet of paper each person wrote down a sentence on their piece of paper every thirty seconds. When Sasha called “time,” everyone would pass their piece of paper to the person on their left and that person would write a new sentence. This would happen five times so that a short story was written .

The more abstract goal of this activity was to show how team members can play off of each other’s thoughts and ideas, and turn tiny inklings of ideas into something new and interesting. In one situation, a team’s story took a fairly predictable path but in other story, it took crazy twists and turns and became something totally different and unique. Always remember that a little seedling of an idea can go a long way when when its manipulated and altered through collaboration and teamwork.

Here are a few stories some wrote:

This pen is so cool.
It makes me tickle inside.
Elmo tickles inside.
Elmo is an amazing person once you get to know him.
I only wish he would be my best friend.

Christmas is my favorite day of the year.
Because when I was young my mother would make macaroons!
They were amazing.
I hope we have a white Christmas.
but I was a bad kid so no cookies for me.

The power of postive thinking will rule the world.
But in order to rule the world we must unite!
or we can just get rid of everyone else.
Eitherway we are not stopping until we win.
I love basketball.

Free Hugs and a Dance Party

Last week Frank was giving away some free gifts before the Black Friday sales started: Free Hugs!

Frank started the morning holding up a “Free Hugs” sign, inviting anyone from the company to share a warm greeting to get the day started.  Inspired by Juan Mann’s campaign for happiness and his own personal defeat of depression, Frank told the story of the “Free Hugs” and how it went from one man trying to make the world a better place to a viral video viewed by more than 70 million people.
Frank also introduced the team to a social experiment called the Dance Floor Theory; creating a network of people to join you in the middle of the dance floor as opposed to just a few people dancing while rest standing and watching.
Lawline capped off Frank’s presentation with a dance session to get the creative juices flowing and an energetic mindset going.  Between the Free Hugs and sporadic dances moves (i.e. the sprinkler, the shopping cart, even a little running man) it was a great way to get the day started for the company.

When life gives you lemons…

For today’s morning presentation, Mike gave us anxiety-causing situations to deal with.

He played a quick game with everyone regarding the core values. We were split up into 2 groups. Everyone was given a situation and had to work with their team to elaborate on the situation to say how it could potentially be negative. Then, each team will use one of the core values to turn the situation in the positive.

We had  30 seconds to come up with the potentially negative situation and how the core value would provide a solution.
Situations:
Example: Stuck on the train
potentially negative: You’re cramped up with a bunch of people and it’s extremely uncomfortable.
Core value: Actively learning. You use the opportunity to make a little small talk with the professional you’re squished against, and learn they’re an attorney who’s CLE deadline is in 6 days and they haven’t completed it.

  1. Traveling home for the holidays.
  2. You can’t find your wallet.
  3. You hear that a friend has said something mean about you.
  4. You’re sick and have to miss an important appointment.
  5. You’re moving into a new apartment.

There were a lot of great solutions such as finding another faster route during traffic and having friends help you move when you don’t have movers.
The point of this was to highlight how any situation can be turned into a positive. Like it says in The Success Principles book, how we react to situations determines if they are good or bad. Our core values can be used in any potentially negative situation to turn it into a positive.

When you get lemons, you should not only make lemonades but also soft drinks, marinades, Pine-Sol, etc. Have fun while doing it!

Giving Thanks

Jeff
Over the holidays, Jeff Reekers (COO of Lawline) sent an email to everyone at Lawline.com giving thanks to each person. It is so endearing that I had to share it on the culture blog..in condensed form.  He didn’t have to do this as a simple Happy Thanksgiving is what people usual say. However, Jeff shared what was in his heart.
Thank you Jeff… We’re all thankful to work and share our life with you!!
Jeff Reekers: “…The majority of my life is spent with every single one of you, and I find my life to be an absolute blessing because of it. I want to take a moment to let you all know what I am so thankful for:

Christie and Micah…
I am thankful that in my early days, I sat next to Christie – who from day one I have regarded as an expert in how to handle customers and people in general. I’m thankful that, at the same stage of my career, I had the opportunity to work closely with Micah, who provided me the opportunity to learn the production department from the inside out, and was always so patient despite having so much to do.

Chris, Trisha, and Pam…
I am thankful that every day when I wake up and every night when I go to sleep, that all customers are taken care of and are happy because Chris is there to see to it. I am thankful his passion is a part of our company, and that Trish and Pam are both there assuring everyone is taken care of, even if it requires staying late and cramming Lawline and study time together.

Ann, Anna, Rob, and Matt G. …
On a similar note, I am thankful that every person – whether a job candidate, faculty member, or someone else, steps into the office, he/she is greeted by Ann’s cheerful spirit.
Few things have made me happier than seeing Anna, who I worked side by side with in her early days, progress from a shyer time to now allowing the world to have a glimpse of just how unbelievably intelligent and talented she is.
I am thankful to having Rob – what we would do without him I am not sure. And speaking of filling gaps, I am so thankful every time I see Matt Gold sign into off hours customer service.

Sal and Mike R.
I am thankful (actually, perhaps more envious) of Sal’s unshakable positive outlook on life and youthful, bright smile.
I am thankful to have gotten to know Mike Rutledge more and more over the past 1.5 years.

Todd, Elliot, Jason, Seth, and David P…
I am thankful that at times that could have been very difficult for the company, Todd’s leadership took over and he has created a foundation for which we are growing a staff of unmatched talent, including Elliot who has been both an asset and a pleasure in his short time thus far. It has also allowed us to invite Jason to the team, whose boldness and confidence in his early work has already shown to be a huge asset intellectually, developmentally, creatively, and inspirationally.
To continue, I am thankful for every Monday and Wednesday, the days we have Seth’s skills at hand. Also, David P. whose knowledge makes our site run safe and secure, and whose humor knows no bounds and is able to alleviate stress at times of potential problems.

Ken, Gamal, TT and Corey…
I am thankful to know Ken, whose skill and determination is hard to come by. I am thankful for him and TT, Gamal, and Corey in their ability to lead our staff and our company from our transitional into our 61 Broadway office from our old office.

Stephanie, Jeff, Mike L., Julie ,and Mike F. …
I am thankful to see Stephanie’s passions come out on a daily basis and to be apart of her positive aura. I can say the same for Julie, Jeff, Mike L, and Mike F., who all seamlessly fit into the culture.  I know this entire group will continue to grow and lead with in addition to the tangible skills of their positions.

Alexa and Sean…
I am thankful for Alexa’s consistency, punctuality, and friendly voice that is matched by her friendly demeanor (have you heard our Lawline Voicemail? It is fantastic!)…
I’ve been thankful for Sean since I first talked with him and that I have witnessed in his time here his ability to be soft-spoken and serious and simultaneously stern and driven.

Michele, Brandon, Sasha, MK, and Nancy…
I am thankful for Michele, who saw something good in me when I first met her.
I am thankful for Brandon for being one of the most creative and intelligent individuals I have come across.
I am thankful to have witnessed Sasha in her Halloween CLE course. Her professionalism, speech, and organization were of a maturity level most seasoned attorney can only dream of having.
I am thankful to MK for reminding me the value of culture…Also, the time and investment he puts into training new members of the staff, such as Nancy, who has pushed our product forward and been nothing but a pleasure with us.

Kyle, Frank, and David…
I am thankful to Kyle, and to see every day his ability to adapt, learn, grow, and drive.
I am thankful to Frank and have been since the day I met him.
I am thankful for Dave and his faith in me (and in all of us) has allowed me the nonstop joy of pursuing my passions and paving the way for me to focus these passions into the centralized mission.

And one last thing…. I am very thankful for ToFurky!”

Helping the Invisible Children

Alexa shared an inspiration story this Tuesday morning about helping others.

Alexa: “Here is a video I chose to share for the morning presentations. I think Natalie Warne’s story is inspiring to people of all ages. It is never too late or too early to make a difference and start a movement. You just have to be passionate about your cause and know that results don’t happen over night. I also like the video because she mentions the importance of team work. Though not everyone may be recognized at the national level that she was, it took an entire team of people that were equally as dedicated and passionate as she.

This video especially meant a lot to me because I was very aware of the organization Invisible Children. I was about 20 years old when I first saw it and the three founders of it were touring from school to school showing the video and educating people. I always regretted not joining an organization like this when I was still in college. Watching the TED video made me realize it is never too late to make a positive contribution and join an organization that you strongly believe in.”

Here is the link to the TED video

Here is also a link to the documentary Invisible Children if you want to view it and its FREE!

Pay It Forward

This Wednesday, Mike expressed how helping goes a long way.

Mike L. : “The video I chose is entitled “Pay It Forward”, and it demonstrates our core value, Taking Time to Help Others. As all of you already know, I am the “new guy” here at Lawline. Over the past two weeks, everyone has been extremely helpful as I am becoming more accustomed to the company and my daily routine. Whether it takes two or twenty minutes of one’s time, helping one another truly goes a long way. The benefit is not expecting anything in return, but to hope that the person you lent a helping hand to will do the same for another individual. My friend told me yesterday how she dropped her watch down a storm sewer on her way to work. Immediately, her first thought was that she’d never see her piece of jewelry again. She sought help in the local grocery store, and to her surprise, three gentlemen opened up the sewer cap and retrieved the watch. She was inspired to practice the same type of kindheartedness and pass it on to others. As in the video, we all should pay it forward, whether it is in or outside the workplace because an act of kindness can really make the difference in one’s day.”

Human Endurance

I just finished reading two books that opened up my eyes to the fact our bodies can be pushed much farther then our current mindset believes is the limit.  The two books are Ultra Marathon Man, “Confession of an All-Night Runner” and Lone Survivor, “The Eyewitness Account of the Operations Redwing & The Lost Heroes of Seal Team 10.” Both available on our Kindle account.

Ultra Marathon Man is written by Dean Karnazes where he describes how at age 30 after being fed up after an office party he went home and could not go inside. Instead he went into the garage found some old tennis sneakers and starting running in his boxers and t-shirt.  What started as a hour turned into an all night run where after 30 miles he had to call his wife to pick him up.  This run rekindled something inside of him where through the pain of running he all of sudden once again felt alive.  The running became an obsession and soon enough he was running a 100 mile race through the mountains in a 24 hour time period.  It went as far as him running a 11 person 199 mile relay all by himself. Not once but several times. He would run for a full weekend straight with barely any rest.

Lone Survivor was written by Marcus Luttrell who was the only survivor on an ambush by the Taliban in Afghanistan. He survived for almost a week after the attack until he was rescued.  The first half of the book describes his experience at BUDs training course that all Navy Seals must pass before they start their actually skills training. The goal of BUDs is to weed at the weak. They only want those who want to be a Seal down to their core. Those who will do anything to make their dream become a reality. In this environment you are kept up for days on end and required to do some of the most demanding tasks that are painful to the core.  Netflix has a great 20 minute video on it to get a sense of some of the things they go through called Navy Seals: Class 234. As you can imagine most people dropped out.

What both of these books showed me if you have the right mindset you are capable of doing what initially seems impossible.  As Dean says in his book, mile 60 is not any easier then mile 30, in fact it is more then twice as painful.  However, for him it is that pain the let’s him know he is alive. It is that pain that knows he is pushing himself. While the pain never got easier his ability to deal with it and use it to push him further is what made him successful.  What became clear in Lone Survivor, the experience during the BUDs training  allowed him to survive out in the mountains severely injured, with gun shot wounds and little or no sleep.  It was exactly what he done in BUDs and he was prepared to do it again.

Both of these individuals are amazing examples of human endurance at it’s best and they are at the extreme end.  However, this is a message we can all apply to our daily lives. Too often as soon as many of us encounter some sort of pain or resistance we stop.  We think ok that is the limit we can take.  I promise you after reading these books you will NEVER feel that way  again.  In fact you will be inspired to keep pushing through the pain and hardship to see how much you can take and realize you are not even close to 10% of your limit.

On a more personal note, I am 4 days away from my first marathon.  Am I nervous? Sure.  However, I know I have done the proper training, I have run almost 400 miles, I did my max run at 20 miles and regardless of any setbacks I will finish even if slower then I want.  Most importantly I know that what 4 months ago seemed to be beyond my limit is now in my dead center aim.

In honor of Veterans Day …

As part of her senior project in college, CLE consultant, Stephanie helped construct a website including video, articles and links informing the public about PTSD.  One of the components was a military personal story.  Its featured video described an unfortunate story about Marine Combat Photographer Jordan Sherwood.  Jordan was wounded in Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated, leaving him with extensive wounds and months of recovery.  His story was both heartbreaking and inspiring because he demonstrated a great ability to be take his injuries and turn them into a new, positive way to look at life.  He is one of the few that survives incidents like this.   Despite his injuries, Jordan looks at life in a positive light and as a way to overcome his hardships.  Jordan shows that there is always a way to make things better for yourself even when faced with extremes and this is the message I wanted to convey to Lawline.  That there is a light at the end of the tunnel, no matter how dark it may seem.

Mike wants to be like Mike.

In today’s AM Huddle, Mike showed that a person shouldn’t blamed others if they can’t reach their goals.

Mike F: “I chose this clip because I have always been a long time fan of Michael Jordan. Besides the fact that he is considered by most to be the best basketball player of all time, his work ethic is something to be admired. His drive and determination is legendary. There has never been a basketball player that wanted to be the greatest as badly as he did. I think the video is a great representation of his ideals and how one has to work hard to achieve his goals. There are visual references throughout the video that lead from his childhood all the way to his post-playing career. The overall message in the video though is that he got to where he is with extreme dedication and drive and not just god given talent. This video inspires me to be better. It makes me feel like I have control of my own destiny and the more amount of effort I put in the more I will achieve.”

Lawline does not promote or support Nike. Although, Mike F. does own 6 pairs. :)

The Scribble Game

This Monday morning, Michele revealed the kid in all of us!

Lawline.com’s employees closed their eyes and used their crayons and construction paper to create their 30 second masterpieces, they then passed their pictures to their colleagues to the left of them who had 30 seconds to add to the art work. The second part of the exercise was repeated three times. Most participants were very pleased with the additions their colleagues made to their work.

We learned something very important this morning during the Scribble Game. We are all just kids at heart – at least artistically! Like children, our pictures included many common themes of rainbows, snowmen, sunny days, kids on slides, a refrigerator and even a guy who looks like Osama Bin Laden. In addition to exhibiting our communal artistic chops, The Scribble Game teaches us the benefits to trusting your initial instincts and ideas as your best, and to learning how to develop your projects with the assistance and contributions of your fellow team members.

Thanks everyone!

A Journey to the Marathon – On Cloud 9

clouds (http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnmueller/52621490/) / John Mueller (http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnmueller/) / CC BY-NC-ND 2.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/)

So it’s less then two weeks to the Philadelphia marathon and I am doing great. The main reason has to do with the fact I ran 10 miles in the NYC marathon today.  I had no idea that the energy was so amazing.  Kyle and I started in Brooklyn where it seemed liked there was a band every 10 blocks playing music that pumped you up.  Between the music, the energy of the spectators and the runners surrounding you the feeling was euphoric.

The route was one we had done many timed before through Williamsburg to 59th street bridge to 1st Avenue so it felt great being on familiar ground. The difference this time was we were running in the middle of a party. I started with Advil to prevent any knee pain which was key and we finished the 10 miles feeling as if we could have gone the full 26.

Unfortunately, last weekend was not such a positive story. On our 20 mile run my knee was really hurting and by mile 5 I had to stop. We found Advil and sat down for a few minutes. Kyle asked me what level the pain was and I said a 4 or 5, but I didn’t want to do anything to make it worse. It was his next line that got me up again when I was ready to quit. He said, “if it was me I would run until my leg fell off or at least until the pain was at a 9.”  The thing is with him I knew that was 100% true and that got me going again. So I got up and finished the next 15 miles with great energy. It really is amazing to me what a positive mindset and 3 Advil can do for you.  We continued from 100th street down the east river and looped around the bottom of Manhattan up the West Side highway to 42nd. Running around the river is just beautiful.  I love how the Philly Marathon website has a clock ticking down to the minute. 13 days 9 hours and 36 minutes and counting!

Taking Control of Your Life

This Friday morning, Sal told us to be responsible and here’s why:

Sal: “I have never been much of a motivational book reading type of guy, but after being handed The Success Principles by Jack Canfield one of my first days working for Lawline, I decided to give it a try. The first chapter has stuck with me the most, and it effected an immediate change in my outlook on life. It’s entitled “Take 100% Responsibility of Your Life”. It made me realize that I am the cause of all of my experiences in my life. Sure there are things that are out of my control, such as gravity and the weather, but by actively taking control of those things that I do have control over I can better my life. By controlling your life you can achieve your goals, and overcome obstacles. It is all about how you react to particular circumstances. This requires great drive, and that is why I chose the clip for today. It describes someone who, having several odds stacked against him, manages to make the best out of his life.”

Here is another clip that speaks about hard work and drive. It is similar to a post on October 19, 2011 by David Schnurman:

This is….Jeopardy (Lawline Style)

Wednesday morning started like a Pop Quiz!

Alex Trebeck has some new competition coming out of the Lawline Office. With the company growing and new employees starting every week, Lead Program Attorney Kyle Robinson, thought it would be a great idea to bring some trivia to our morning meetings. With questions ranging from the year Lawline started, to what is Dave’s middle name, everyone got involved. In the end, team “E” came away with the win but everyone now knows a little bit more about the company and what we are all about!

The Engine That We Are

Bang! Ti! Zoop! Those were the sounds coming out of the AM Morning Huddle on Tuesday.

Ken’s presentation was Improv based aimed at incorporating movement and sound with rythym to simulate an engine. Thus team work. Everyone was in a circle and one person started off with any sound of their choosing. It continued with the next person until we were working as a machine. There was not enough time to incorporate words but definitely next time.
