Exuding Optimism

To Making it Happen – Oscar Winner INOCENTE Inspiring OPTIMISM

INOCENTE is an intensely personal and vibrant coming of age documentary about a young artist’s fierce determination to never surrender to the bleakness of her surroundings.

The challenges are staggering, but the hope in Inocente’s story proves that the hand she has been dealt does not define her, her dreams do.

I hope through the message of my presentation, we can utilize it as motivation in our everyday lives as well as work by incorporating it under FurtherEd’s Core value of “Exuding Optimism”. By carrying these inspirational stories such as Inocente’s, and applying one of these many core values into our daily lives; we can take the company to even further heights while at the same time grow personally within ourselves! :@)

Click the picture below to hear Inocente’s story.

FurtherEd Core Values Newsletter – April

Actively Learning Fannon

Close on the heels of the inspiring precedent set by Blair, Jeff dove headfirst into Videography 201 via the FurtherEd TV show. When Melissa and Blair’s schedules were such that Micah needed someone else to operate one of the cameras, Jeff took on the job without hesitation – in fact with excitement and good cheer – despite having no real background with videography while at the same time knowing that his work would be broadcasted on television to the largest city in the nation.

He was an avid student, and was completely receptive to feedback when reviewing the footage after the fact. Since then, he’s filmed four additional segments, including two on the same day as a Learn Session that he taught, and has upped his game tremendously where every aspect of the camera is concerned, from composition to movement to lighting. Thanks, Jeff!

Seeking Creative Solutions 2.Joe

Now Known As Detective Joe!

The Case of the Disappearing Bullet Points!

GC Michele went to Dev. 2.Joe with a mystery that no team member was able to solve for a decade: the disappearing bullet points from the bundle description. Michele had tried everything: using bullets from admin, hitting alt and 7 on number pad simultaneously; cutting and pasting from notepad; and each time the bullets appeared on admin but on the live site she only saw a question mark. Desperate to make the bundle page as dynamic as possible for the launch of FurtherEd Real Estate she hired 2.Joe for the case. At first he said “no problem” until he looked at the code… he knew it would be a challenge, but he was up for the challenge.

Donning his super sleuth hat, he tried code after code and still the bullets disappeared or it could only be done through Q/A. Michele had given up and was ready to throw in the towel, but 2.Joe would not quit and finally discovered a secret formula that would allow any team member to add bullets to a bundle description. Now the bullets are on display beautifully on our new real estate site FurtherEd Real Estate Bundle and will add value to all of our bundles descriptions. Dev. 2.Joe solved the case- kudos to his ability to seek a creative solution

Taking Time to Help Others Julie

Mo doesn’t know what core values Julie did not meet in the last month. She has gone out of her way to train and support three new staffers and to teach them to become successful in the last 3-5 weeks.

Julie is constantly working, even when she’s at home she is always thinking of ways she can improve the sales team or her role as their leader. She goes above and beyond her normal duties on a daily basis to make sure she’s doing whatever she can in her power to help this company grow.

Always taking time to help out with a sale and offering tips which helps Mike F, Mo, and Jennifer to constantly grow and improve!

She is selfless, dedicated, always learning and teaching. In short, she has absolutely been godsent.

Exuding Optimism Mo

Yes, she has a tiara. Awesome, right?

The Schnurm has never seen so many yellow sticky notes in his life. Smily faces, notes of encouragement to herself, oranges with faces drawn on them. Whatever the secret is to being optimistic Mo has cracked the code and The Schnurm want in!

From the first moment he met her she has had this positivity that has not wavered for a moment. You see her smiling, laughing, and just having fun on the phone all day. This type of optimism is infectious and it has especially meant a lot to him during the past week.

Thanks Mo for being you! Always has great energy and laugh even when having to do a double wammy of Blitz calls; making 200+ calls!!

Driven to Find a Better Way Maverick Joe

Anyone who works around the Video Production office has surely heard the iPhone alarms going off about once an hour the last few months as reminders to start the rebroadcasts.

NO MORE! Joe worked out a system that allows us to set a schedule where the rebroadcasts run on their own, making the lives of Melissa, Micah and Jeff much easier. Jeff no longer needs to stop mid conversation to start a rebroadcast.

 Huzanga!!

The Greatest Speech Ever Made

The above video went viral a year or two ago all across the internet.  It is the final speech from the Charlie Chaplin movie The Great Dictator and it is incredibly moving, especially with all of the superimposed imagery in this particular version.

There are many significant points made in the video, but I think the most important of those is that it’s important to be yourself, and simply to love one another.  This speech is an amazing reminder that every day you should be trying not only to improve your own life, but also the lives of those around you.  The best thing about working at FurtherEd is that we are given the opportunity to do just that.  We work hard every day not just because it’s a job, but to constantly grow and to make the world a better place.  We’re not micromanaged or ruled and we are generally given the freedom to work on projects at our own pace and to collaborate with other departments.

Bob Dylan once said, “A man is a success if he gets up in the morning and goes to bed at night and in between does what he wants to do.”  I believe this is something we all get to do here at FurtherEd, and words cannot describe how proud of that I truly am.

Lucky #13 in NY!

There’s no doubt about that ! On Tuesday, April 30th Frank took Micah, Chris, and Julie to Albany for the 2013 Awards Dinner of Best Companies to work for in New York. FurtherEd ranks #13 in New York. Some might see it as unlucky but it’s our Lucky 13 here! It is superb to have our award displayed in our hallway. Congrats to the other fellow winners.

We’re so proud of our company and know we’re number 1 in our hearts!

Frank, Micah (holding award), Chris and Julie beaming proudly!

FurtherEd Core Values Newsletter – March

Actively Learning Meredith

Meredith has been our resident expert in teachem as well as FurtherEd Tech over the last few months.  Her ability to execute has made her an invaluable piece of our team, especially in helping to diversify FurtherEd from mandatory continuing education to a more general learning platform.

If you were to ask Meredith any question in the world, she will either know the answer or find it out.  Actively learning seems to be her thing!

Seeking Creative Solutions Frank

Frank has been working with Ryan in Customer Support over the past few weeks to broaden and sharpen his skill set to help him grow personally as well as to become a more versatile team member at FurtherEd.  Frank has helped Ryan set reasonable goals while still challenging himself, all while providing the support necessary to keep pushing ahead.  Without Frank’s input, Ryan’s not sure if he’d be taking the ambitious steps.

This is part of a larger effort to improve the company as a whole, by tailoring individual improvement to each employee.  This program is the future of FurtherEd, and couldn’t happen without Frank’s leadership.

Taking Time to Help Others Blair

Where to begin?  Not content to stop with a basic mastery of Wirecast, Blair has thrown herself into every aspect of production, including some of its most challenging projects.  She was assistant videographer for several TV show tapings, and chief videographer for two, taking on the daunting task of maneuvering the camera between the two guest speakers in such a way that the final composition was always up to broadcast standards, and this is a project that would have required her to come in several hours before her scheduled start time.

She then dived into a task that could intimidate any beginner – Bridge the Gap, which she spent two days filming, including the nothing-to-sneeze at task of panning the camera to track speakers in motion.

And this is just the big stuff.  Whether it’s putting mics on speakers in a pinch, preparing images for a webcast, lending her voice talent to an outro for the TV show, or charging batteries when doing so was the one main thing Micah couldn’t get to, Blair has been an indispensable part of keeping the video production machine chugging forward.  She is the definition of this Core Value.

Exuding Optimism Malcolm

Malcolm has heard it all from every attorney (the good and the bad) but he has pushed through his first four weeks and started to develop into an awesome salesperson.

He has learned a lot throughout the process, including getting acclimated to FurtherEd, and it is very easy to hear the difference in his voice from his first week.

Malcolm comes in every day with his head held high and with the hope to learn something new to help improve himself.  He already has a few sales under his belt and he has many more to come.

Driven to Find a Better Way Richard

Rich seems to be everywhere.  In the developers office, in the customer support office, the kitchen; the guy is everywhere.

Call him the scrum master or just plain Rich Hernandez, you could even speak any language and I’m sure Rich would understand what you’re saying.

Rich not only helps in web development project management but he is making our customers say WOW every single day.

For always finding out where we can find free ice cream, here’s to you Rich!

To College and Beyond…

L-R top clockwise: Jeff F, Stephanie, Melissa, Sigalle, Meredith, Jeff R, Joe, Richard, Lauren V, Ann

On March 19th, ten wonderful individuals volunteered to participate in our third Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Youth Development Program. This time, we went to the Brooklyn International High School to speak with high school seniors about life at college and beyond. It was very humbling speaking with all of these enlightened students. Almost all the students were from another country and didn’t have English as their first language. However, that didn’t stop these kids from getting ahead. The program at the school is incredible and helps the students achieve their dreams.

As always, it was a great experience but don’t take my word for it. Here are some feedbacks from our Marketing Coordinator, Meredith & our Web Developer, Joe:

JoeMy expectations that it would be a lot more formal than it was and that many students would be more apathetic to our presence — for that reason I felt nervous. It actually turned out to be the opposite and nearly all of the students were incredibly enthusiastic and grateful. The best part of the program for me was the diversity of the student I had the opportunity to talk to. I loved hearing about their interests and what they believed the future held for them. I learned a lot from how motivated the kids were and I believe a lot of that stems from the conditions and experiences many of them had growing up.

All about helping the kids!

Two students interested in [web] programming approached me as the rest of the students left. They told me they were disappointed that I didn’t get around to their table; they had a lot of questions to ask.

MeredithI was so surprised by the number of kids who were tentative about going away from home next year, given that all of these kids have already left home to come to the US. I reminded them that they’ve already done the hard part, and that the fun part is finding yourself and enjoying your own independence. Towards the end of the sessions though, I was talking to a bunch of kids and asking where they all want to be next year. One by one they all said they wanted to stay in New York because they didn’t want to go away. When I got to the last girl she said “No way! I want to go to Santa Barbara, it’s WAY too cold here!”

Seeing the kids’ excitement about their futures reminded me to be excited about what I’ve still got ahead of me, even though college is over and I’ve started a career. It was refreshing to see high schoolers who were so forward-thinking. I tried to teach the kids about keeping an open mind to new experiences, that resumes should be kept to ONE page, and that there’s nothing like getting jobs/internships while in college to both boost your resume and help you figure out what you love/don’t love doing.

Thank you Big Brothers Big Sisters for giving the opportunity to help out!

FurtherEd Core Values Newsletter

Actively Learning Blair

When Blair first started at FurtherEd, she expressed interest in video production, and within the past two weeks she has been training with Melissa on webcasting.  Blair jumped in with both feet and has been nothing but determined and positive about the whole experience.  She’s also learning very quickly!

Blair now knows the in’s and out’s of Wirecast, how to operate the cameras, and how to control audio.  Blair exemplifies actively learning because she stepped outside of her comfort zone to learn a new skill.  Great job Blair!

Seeking Creative Solutions Melissa & Micah

Micah and Melissa have shown the patience of saints with the internet situation in their room.  We have continuously worked to improve their internet while streaming courses and it has worked to some extent, but we still have not perfected it.

Thanks to their ability to seek creative solutions by wiring computers from an internet port across the room and know when they are on RCN or FIOS, they have saved many customers and employees time.

I (Frank) promise you a logical and non-creative solution is on its way.  Thanks for your help!

Taking Time to Help Others Mark

This one is obvious.  Debugging is a frustrating and exhausting process.  Most developers prefer to create rather than repair.  When Agile was on the horizon, we knew we would need someone focused on bugs and, as Dave calls them, “fires” while the rest of the team focused on new features.  Mark stepped up to handle bugs and has proven reliable and efficient at this task.

He was also strangely enthusiastic about it.  By doing this alone, he allowed the rest of the team to deliver your new admin.  Without him in that seat Deb Development’s work would never get done.   Ina very short period of time he took on the ruff code that drives FurtherEd and learned it.  He can take anything anyone throws at him without having to refer to the veteran developers.  He also really enjoys Flavors.

Mark really handled this role great and has been very patient and direct with all fixes.  Good work Mark, you are both a scholar and a gentleman.

Exuding Optimism Team Retention

Casey, Stephanie, and Lauren H make up our customer retention team and Sal is glad they do!  They each have an incredible personality that radiates through the phone and into the hearts of our customers.  Not only are they letting our members know how great FurtherEd is and about our offers, but they are on the front-lines of receiving feedback from our members.

Sal can talk about how awesome they are all day, but he wants to focus on the last day in February: They CRUSHED it.  They had 27 sales collectively and had over 200 outbound calls (this was on top of the waves of incoming calls they were handling).

This wasn’t just a freak occurrence; it was a strategically calculated plan by Team Retention.

They worked together to figure out when to send blasts, when to switch lists, and when to follow up on certain leads.  They worked hard all of February, staying optimistic throughout, and had an awesome last day of the month!

Driven to Find a Better Way CPE Crew

It is easy to confuse CPE with standing for Continued Persistence & Effort when you see these guys at work.  Whether it is putting together a schedule of all-day broadcasting, locking down new faculty partnerships, adding new courses to the CPE catalog, or sharing ideas for improving the website and building the CPE brand, the CPE team is always in drive.

Due to their relentless pursuit of finding a better way, CPE is growing in popularity and is on its rapid rise to shake up the world of continuing education.  Soon after that, world domination is in their sights.

Their hard work is setting a great benchmark as we continue to launch and expand into new verticals in the future.

Soaring Treats

This morning there were three mysterious boxes on the table. As the morning meeting went on, our eyes shifted back from the speakers to the boxes. “What are they?” “Who put them there?” “I need to know!”
Finally, Chris stepped forward and spoke three magic words, “I bought cupcakes!” Those words alone were awesome but what made them more spectacular was that they all had our FurtherEd Logos! The breakfast treats were heavenly and fluffy….YES, breakfast. Please don’t judge.

Chris looking dapper with his bowtie and cupcake offerings!

How awesome are these!?

The Art of the Imperfect

When it comes to art, the ability to draw a straight line seems like a fundamental skill to have with nearly any medium. Phil Hansen can’t draw a straight line. But he can create some fantastic artistic pieces. In this short Ted Talk that I shared with everyone this morning, Hansen shows us that even in imperfection, one can find perfection in the most imperfect of circumstances.

You can take away our keys, and you can take away our phones, but you can’t take away our dreams…

Because, we’re like sleeping when we have them!

Words of wisdom from the Brothers Butabi.

On Thursday, February 21st of the year 2013, the FurtherEd team looked to Chris Kattan and Will Ferrell to illustrate the power of optimism.

In the movie, “A Night at The Roxbury,” two unique brothers are trying to find their way into the ultra-exclusive, Los Angeles club scene.

Unfortunately, the Brothers’ possess neither the looks, nor the vehicle, nor the financial wherewithal to get their names on the elusive, Roxbury club, list!

But fear not. The Brothers recognize their situation, overcome doubt, and eventually rely on positivity, optimism and good fortune. Despite a generous peppering of nearly insurmountable obstacles on their path to “dancin’,” the Brothers repeatedly take time to reassure each other that if they stick to their “guns,” that they will one day not only participate in but own a piece of that “Sweet, Sweet world.”

Eventually, their optimism leads the Brothers to a right-place, right-time situation, where they make the “contacts of a lifetime,” with a top-tier club owner, Mr. Zadir!

The FurtherEd staff watched the evolution of their optimism and, in the final scene, saw how the brothers were rewarded by being appointed managers of “Only the hottest club in town, a la the Roxbury!”

Sure… the brothers lack the skills and resourcefulness of the focused FurtherEd team. However, the situations are certainly parallel. Like the Butabi brothers, FurtherEd sets a goal, identifies the hurdles, and remains optimistic until the goal is achieved. By never wavering in this commitment to optimism, the Butabi’s and we here at Lawline cement our culture and continue to grow, individually and as a team

Valentine’s Day Presentation

This Valentine’s Day I decided to show a short film entitled “One Step Forward” because it exemplified several of our core values. Initially, I wanted to show the film because of how well the protagonist exuded optimism. After doing a little research, I discovered that the back story behind the making of the movie was actually a perfect exemplar of seeking creative solutions. Instead of simply showing the film as is, I created a teachem course that included the interesting tidbits and facts that I learned about the making of the movie.  Watch the film below!

Friday Morning Pep Talk

Last Friday morning as NYC prepared for a weekend blizzard, I thought everyone might need a little extra inspiration to get through the day. What better way to wake everyone up in the morning than a good pep talk! This one from Kid President was just right. He reminds us of all the core values – as well as to appreciate the little things and never get up – remember if Michael Jordan had quit, he would have never made Space Jam!

Appreciating Our City

For today’s morning meeting, Jeff showed us a video from the group CDZA, which used New York City street names as musical inspirations. When I first saw the video back in December, I didn’t fully “get” all the references. Some of the songs were unfamiliar to me, and some were familiar songs but I didn’t know who sang them. I decided to create a teachem class using the video so that everybody could fully understand why all the songs were chosen.

In the end, Jeff pointed out that the video makes us truly appreciate the city in which we live and work  - there’s inspiration all around us! Watch the video, enjoy, and learn some new music while you’re at it!

RICHARD: December’s Winner of “Exuding Optimism”

For anyone that does not get to listen to Richard on the phone with customers throughout the day, you are missing out. This guy is having a ball; it’s like he’s actively participating in a Happiness Competition.

He’s so nice to customers, and genuinely engages with them. It’s awesome. The developer room seems to be filled with positive energy every time he is on the phone with a customer. It’s almost as if he is best buddies with every customer he speaks with.

ANN: November’s Winner of “Exuding Optimism”

One common theme from every interview with candidates seems to be their compliments of Ann as they arrive.  Almost all candidates mention their positive interactions and first impressions of the office when Ann greets them and calms their nerves before their meetings.

You would be hard pressed to find her without a smile on her face, and she brings cheer to our office day in and day out.  She is also well-versed in office décor to welcome the holidays!

Thank you Ann for all you do for everyone in the office, and thanks for always doing it with a smile!

Making Winter Wishes Come True

With the holidays upon us, we tend to remember the happy memories we had as a kid when opening the gifts. However, not every child has the opportunity to experience that.

New York Cares runs a program called Winter Wishes in which kids write letters wishing for gifts. I explained to everyone that anyone participating would be a Secret Santa and expect nothing in return but that feeling that they made someone’s Christmas brighter. After getting a majority of the office signed up, we all received our letters and went on a mission to be the best Santas we could. Some requests were pricey such as a Nintendo 3DS, but people here still fulfilled those wishes. All of our gifts have been mailed out and we feel joy throughout the office.

There were a lot of positive feedback.

  • Kenny: “I really enjoyed it. I liked how it gave the gift giver some leeway but also made sure the child got something meaningful.
  • Meredith : “I saved my kid’s letter, I loved it so much. I think I liked it so much because I saw myself in the kid….like when I was her age I wanted to play with the “boy” toys too…I played with Legos and trucks with my brother all the time.

Stephanie making sure the present goes to the right place.

If you couldn’t tell, Sal is a professional gift wrapper.

JEFF F: October’s Winner of “Exuding Optimism”

Jeff has done an incredible job since taking over CPE and has shown a tremendous ability to handle all facets of CPEline.  He handles customer service issues that come over from the CS department, all of the marketing that goes out with any CPE course, works with the developers to make sure every aspect of CPE is correct ton the website (including learning some code on the side) and not to mention the booking of courses and handling of post-production work.

The only aspect of the company we have not seen him dealing with yet on a daily basis is filming a course, which he is scheduled to do next week!

Being Grateful

Rob: It is often the case that we take the good things that we have in life for granted, but the one thing that we should not take for granted is the place that we work.  FurtherEd is where we spend most of our time and we should really take a step back and be thankful for all our the good things that we have at are very fingertips.  The overwhelming majority of us are thankful for just being here, but there were others that more thankful for detailed things.  Even though we may get stressed out and exhausted sometimes, we can’t forget how fortunate we actually are to be working in an environment where we can all be free to express our ideas and make our voices heard.

Progress From Employees’ Standpoint

As a company, we are ever changing…striving for the next step. Hence the creation of FurtherEd and TeachEm! Stale and old are unknown within our walls. With all the new changes, I asked a few employees of their opinion.

  1. What is TeachEm to you?
  2. What do you think about the FurtherEd and future of the company from an employee standpoint?

FRANK

  • I see it as a useful tool for leaders in business, education, and groups to share with members of their team an easier way to digest video content from YouTube.  TeachEm makes it simple to share not only the video, but the note cards in order to cut down videos and the comprehension of the content.
  • FurtherEd is our biggest strength.  It allows everyone in the company the flexibility to give ideas not just on law or accounting education, but education as a whole.  We now have a clearer direction in which our company will follow as well as a larger canvas to paint on using our creativeness.

JULIE

  • I think it is an opportunity to re-invent teaching and apply it to today’s world.  I have friends who are currently teachers, all at different grade levels, and when I speak to them about today’s education and learning process- it is really different than from what I remember school being like as a child.  It is inevitable that we are moving into a completely technological society and children now-a-days are using things that we never would have dreamed of when we were children, same as our parents when they were children.  I think that TeachEm is bridging the gap of the past and future learning and really allowing people to explore all avenues of education.  There really is no limit with TeachEm and it is so easy to use that this can be the next Google.  I say this because people use Google a lot of the time to look up information they don’t already know.  So why not look this up in TeachEm?  You can not only find the answer to that specific question, but maybe other questions you may not have thought of related to that topic.
  • I think that FurtherEd is really taking learning to the next level by allowing limitless possibilities of learning to happen wherever and whenever.  FurtherEd will literally be that place that you can go to to learn about ANYTHING and I love the fact that in this case, the sky really is the limit!

SIGALLE

  • Teachem is the opportunity for individuals, like you and me, to show how we think education should be structured and how we believe learning can be facilitated. It gives the every day person a voice in educational reform.
  •  I believe that this is a wonderful feeling from an Employee standpoint!  We are part of a virtually endless growing opportunity for the company as a whole as the possibility for further verticals is endless! As an employee this is exciting and inspiring and always keeps the momentum going!

KENNY & KYLE: September’s Winner of “Exuding Optimism”

While most of us were sleeping in or watching college football on a Saturday in September, Kenny and Kyle were exuding optimism by growing one our newest verticals; Real Estate.

Both Kenny and Kyle went to the New York Real Estate Institute and filmed courses.  Certainly not the first time these two have gone above and beyond to film a course but the first time for a Real Estate course!

Ugly Sweater Day!!

So you’re probably wondering how we came to this? Well Joe, one of our awesome web developers, got a wildcard prize upon winning last month’s core values. The best decision was to choose Ugly Sweater Day….obviously.
Several fashionistas wore ferosh sweaters this Friday. Some of these sweaters are so exclusive that you won’t find them on a catwalk or any store…not a one.

Enjoy our catch-trending style for the winter season modeled by Staff of Lawline!

Meredith is the sole owner of the sweater.

We all know that is Chris! Work it Blair!

We’re Not About Failing

As many people as seen and laughed at the fail blog, there are those who like seeing success instead. Hence the Win Blog!

Jackie: I chose it because I thought it went well with our core value of “exuding optimism”. Optimism is so contagious that I find the best way to share it with others is by enjoying each others’ excitement and accomplishments. I wanted the team to watch other people excel in their tasks, whether it be sports or tricks, and leave with a sense of optimism to apply in their own tasks.

DAVE S: August’s Winner of the “Exuding Optimism”

When David ended up in the hospital for 5 days as a result of a typical elbow scrape, he was just about to start training for the marathon and was also in the midst of trying to acquire different names for them multi-displine direction of the company.  It would have been very easy to table both of these projects and focus on his pain and discomfort, particularly since the doctors told him he would not be able to run for a couple of weeks.

Instead, while in the hospital, he was constantly texting and instant messaging Lawline team members with new name proposals, and negotiating with owners of URLS he liked.  After that, the first day he was able to run, he laced up his sneakers and hit the pavement.

Last week David announced that he had chosen the name FurtherEd to be the parent company of Lawline, CPE line and other future verticals.  Additionally he ran 13.2 miles!

A 10K Kind of Sunday

Yesterday Dave, Kyle, and I participated in the 31st Annual 10K Community Run & Walk for the second time. Dave & I both were battling colds but still manage to come out to help out the Bed-Stuy Community in Brooklyn. The weather was nice and cool. Luckily the rain held out until all the runners past the finish line.

Could you walk miles in our sneakers?

Lawline’s 5-Year Time Capsule!

The Next Best Thing Since Pandora's Box

Since last Friday morning, Brandon has the office setting up a time capsule that will be opened in 5 years. Since the company is going through some amazing growth right now, he thought it would be an exciting idea to have everyone share their vision of where the company would be in 5 years. On a piece of paper we wrote:

  1. Our Name
  2. Our Job Position
  3. Where We See The Company In 5 Years
  4. Anything We Wanted To Share With Our Future Self/Generation

In addition, there are items we put in the time capsule such business cards, core value cards, and other items that relate to our job and our time here at Lawline. The time capsule will be locked for good on this Friday, 10/6/2012!

Our Favorite Halloween Memory

Alex P: It’s October, and officially autumn in New York City.  Fallen leaves crunch beneath our feet on the walk to the subway, pumpkins adorn stoops and doorways, and the chill in the air makes us hug our sweaters tighter and cup our hot coffees gratefully.

This is my favorite time of year to be in this city, so to truly kick off the season, I asked each Lawliner to share his or her favorite (or most memorable) Halloween costume.  Responses were varied (and hilarious) and included several Power Rangers, Edward Scissorhands, a very dedicated vampire, and a very convincing Slater from Saved by the Bell.  Here’s to another year of creative costumes!

Racing & Baking for the Kids

Lawliners after the race

This past Saturday, a group of Lawliners participated in the 2012 Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC RBC Race for the Kids. It was a beautiful 2.5 mile race through Riverside Park. Afterwards, Nickelodeon hosted a Day of Play for the kids. Michele got to experience every kid’s dream and got slimmed.

However the real work came beforehand from donations raised from family, friends, bake sale, and penny wars.

In the penny wars, we had the office split into two teams and compete to raise pennies for their own team while helping the opposite team lose by giving quarters, dollars, and nickels. In the end, Team 1 “won” and will be getting a frozen yogurt party.  However the real winners are the kids.

Artist Credit: Sal

For Lawline’s 1st bake sale, we sold Confetti Sugar Cookies, Pumpkin Pies, Red Velvet Cupcakes, and Chocolate Chip Banana Walnut Muffins (say that 5 times fast!). The yummy treats were baked by Casey, Trisha, myself, and Symphonie(not pictured). Stephanie not only provided refreshments but was the salesperson. The bake sale was more successful than predicted due to everyone’s awesome teamwork. Dave S., Lawline’s president, matched the bake sale profits from his own pockets.

Lawline.com donated itself $1,525.00 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC! With the collective effort, we raised $3,480.22. We’re so proud to give to such a good cause and have so much fun while doing it!

Needle In A Haystack

Patricia: This morning I decided to play Needle in A Haystack. It was something that my sorority sisters and I did one year for recruitment to get to know our potential pledges. Since I couldn’t bring a haystack to work, I put push pins in a box instead.

There where several different color push pins and each color represented a question. These questions where supposed to be answered by the person who picked the pin and then in turn they could ask another person the same question. I found the questions online or per conversations I had with people. Here is the break down I had:

  • White: What is your first memory?
  • Blue: What smell automatically brings back a memory?
  • Green: Talk or Text?
  • Red: What would be your theme song when you walk into a room?
  • Silver: What scares you?
  • Off white: Favorite artist?
  • Black: Pixar or Dreamworks?

You can have as many colors as you like and make up whatever questions you like. It is a fun way to get to know people because they don’t know what question they will get and it interesting to hear what they will say.

All You Need Is Heart

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Lauren: For my presentation this morning I shared the story of South African Olympian/Paralympian Oscar Pistorious. Pistorious was born with fibular hemimelia and had his legs amputated as a baby. Despite his disability he has trained to become a great runner and athlete through the use of his Cheetah Flex-Foot prosthetic. This year at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games he became the first person to qualify in both the Olympics and Paralympics. In the Olympic Men’s 400m he took second in the first heat and qualified for the semi-finals. He is an inspiring athlete and his story reflects some of Lawline’s core values: seeking creative solutions, driven to find a better way, and exuding optimism.

SYMPHONIE: June’s Winner of the “Exuding Optimism”

Every time we see Symphonie she is always smiling, which in turn makes us smile.   She has taken the initiative on a lot of projects that have been stagnant, such as Lawline’s Culture Book 2.0.  In order to complete this task, Symphonie has organized several department photo-shoots, and even some of the pictures you see here are the work of hers.

Symphonie has been phenomenal in assisting with customer experiences over the phone, taking the lessons she has learned from her peers to practice.

On top of all of that, Symphonie has made some of the most delicious baked goods we have ever tasted.  Her tres leches cake caused many employees to skip their normal breakfast and lunch routines to dig in to the delicious dessert.

May Spotlight: EXUDING OPTIMISM-Janet

We are still waiting for the day when Janet comes to work without a smile on her face.  Every single day, Janet seems to be exuding optimism and sharing that happiness with everyone in the office.

When asked the other day why she seems so damn happy all the time her response was, “Why not?”

That is exactly what Lawline employees say!

Not only does she lead in call volume everyday in the Sales Department, but she does it with a smile on her face!

If Lawline Was A Dance Crew…

Sigalle: One of the things I treasure most about working at Lawline is the feeling of absolute confidence in each of my fellow colleagues.  There exists this certainty that I am among a group of professionals that possess the intelligence, foresight and talent that equals or exceeds my own. This translates into a collaborative ensemble that consistently strives to be better, is ever supportive and never loses confidence or a smile amidst adversity.  This is why I chose to show Lawline the story and talent of Team Illuminate.  Although my only way of describing Lawline to you is in the form of prose, I left it to Team Illuminate to provide that feeling in a more entertaining medium.  Their collaboration, love for their unique product and drive truly reflects what we do here everyday.  Thus, if Lawline was a dance crew…

April Spotlight: Mike F. – EXUDING OPTIMISM

Mike is the type of guy who could talk to anyone, anywhere; A gentleman and a scholar!

Mike’s attitude is also contagious throughout the office.  He always has a smile on his face and does a great job of putting his best foot forward.

While Mike’s sales numbers were not where he projected one month, he did not sulk in his performance, but rather made it a point to exceed his goal the next month.

He did just that!  Setting a personal record in his next month and exuded optimism every step of the way!

A Sprint In The Park

It is a sore Friday today around the office but it was definitely worth it! Yesterday, Lawline.com were in Central Park to race in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge for a second time. There were 25 of us, mostly first-timers to this event, that participated. We had a strong cheering crowd from our other co-workers too!

Our day consisted of carbing up on pasta, heading to the park to warm up and enjoy a nice picnic. With such a beautiful day, it was nice to relax together after work. Frank lead a stretching class with finesse and then it was game time. We ran, jogged and walked for greatness. Most of the sophomores did better than their last year’s time. Jeff bested Micah this year! Afterwards, we stopped by a nearby sushi joint for some rolls and beer while chatting about our experiences on the road.

Next year I feel the freshmen will come out on top….you never know.

Scavenger Hunt

Something you use everyday…
Something round…
Something straight…
Something from the kitchen…
Something flexible/stretchy…
Something created in the 1800s…

This morning, 5 teams had one minute to gather these items in Symphonie‘s Scavenger Hunt. After all these items were gathered, they had two minutes to create a device that will end world hunger and then present to others what each other came up with.
Afterwards, they were treated to her Raspberry Chocolate Banana Bread muffin. YUMMY!

Symphonie: It was nice to see the team so hyped about this activity and come together to make this work. I loved how everyone was taking it so seriously and determined to get the job done. This makes me reflect on how we work here at Lawline.com, with determination yet having fun doing it cause we love to be here!

I incorporated all of the 5 Core Values we have into a Scavenger Hunt:
The Scavenger Hunt is an Actively Learning Tool, which brings us together to Help Each Other Seek Creative Solutions, while Exuding Optimism for your team to win. Driven to be better comes into play for the next scavenger hunt we participate in the near future.

Leave Your Legacy

That is the answer Ray Lewis gives when he asked “What you would spend today doing?”.
Yesterday morning, Mike F. showed a video of Ray gives to the Stanford Basketball team. Ray Lewis is a great motivational speaker and Mike thinks some of the metaphors he uses and the way he speaks can motivate anyone to be great.
Needless to say, the team went on to winning big that game.

Lawline Team Culture – Post 12 of 20

Ted Videos

In Lawline.com Morning Meetings, TED Videos have become a staple at least a few days a month. TED videos have become extremely popular over the last two years, with people bringing up “Ideas Worth Spreading” to live and online audiences.

There are TED conferences, TED Talks, TED Events….. basically there is a lot of TED going around!

Derek Sivers: How to start a movement

The link above is to one of my personal favorites, titled, “Derek Sivers: How to start a movement”

He uses a popular YouTube video to portray how to get others involved in what your trying to accomplish. One “Lone Nut” begins dancing, and is joined by another who begins dancing. But it doesn’t stop there….eventually there are dozens dancing along together.

Derek mentions in the video while it took courage to be the first person to start dancing, it was really the second person that was the key to success as it’s much easier to follow two people than one.

Hope you enjoy the video!

Next Stop: Leaving High School

On Friday, April 27th , Lawline.com had another opportunity to team up with Big Brother Big Sisters and participate in the Youth Development Program again! Besides myself, we had a new team of mentors come and speak with high school seniors who were majoring in Marketing.
Here’s what some of the mentors had to say:

Trisha: It is so different from when I went to high school and I loved seeing how it has changed. I learned that the kids are really mature for their age and know a lot more then what I did at that age.  I think I taught them what really happens in college and that they should prepare out what they want to do and be okay with change because it will happen. I really had a great time and wish I could have spent more time there and really got to learn more about the kids and the school.

Ryan: The best part of the program was getting the chance to meet every student as opposed to just a few of them. It really gave me an opportunity to see just how unique in their interests and yet how similar in their fears each of them were. I felt that many of them were fairly focused and set on what they wanted to do. I expected the students to be attentive, but not entirely enthusiastic about having strangers coming in and talking about their jobs. Instead they were happy to talk about everything, and were open about what was going on in their lives and receptive to any advice I could give, no matter how useful/useless. I’m impressed at how much more focused and driven the students are than I was at that age.

Corey: My favorite was just being able to be real with the students who are basically where I was 5 years ago. The hardest part was engaging with the students who were shy. I tried teaching them that it’s ok to explore your options. I think the enjoyment of it all exceeded my expectations.

Andrew: The best part of the program was how eager the students were to listen and absorb everything that I shared with them. it appeared they wanted to be there learning as much as I wanted to be there teaching. I was really impressed how mature the students were. I was fortunate that I did not have to work while in high school and could just concentrate on my studies. However, I do think entering the workforce while at school does have advantages. I stressed that It is important to get involved in activities and network ones self to meet as many people as you could. Networking is the most important skill in the work force today. It was an experience in which I felt great after I left because I felt that I positively impacted others which is something that I love to do.

Steph: There was this girl was dying to ask me about public relations and I was glad to be able to give her some advice on course work in college and internships. The hardest part was getting those who didn’t want to talk, to talk.  I attempted varying the topics (school, friends, parties etc). I hope I taught them that change is okay! Especially changing your major, even schools.  That it’s important to figure out what you don’t like as much as what you do like.

March Spotlight: Sigalle – EXUDING OPTIMISM

Becoming a new program attorney is no easy task. You have to go through Kyle…enough said. However, Sigalle makes it seem like a theme park ride with her bottomless optimism. She has booked courses, done interviews, and hosted live events with confidence and fiery energy. She has only been here a little over a month but it seems she has been her forever. She perhaps a program attorney in her past life; who knows?

Pair Up

Last Thursday, Jeff Fann, an intern for the Production Department, presented on his last day here. We’ll miss him around here. Thanks for your hard work Jeff F!

Jeff Fann: For my last day at Lawline, I decided to just go with something lighthearted and fun. Inspirational is always great but sometimes it’s helpful just to let loose and laugh. I decided to play a game wherein people would get pieces of paper with the name of an animal and, acting as that animal, would have to locate similar “animals” in the room.

As predicted, things got wacky pretty quickly and I was happy to see everyone was taking on their new roles enthusiastically. The highlight of the entire exercise came from Micah. Not knowing how many people would show up, I made more pieces of paper than there were participants. Micah (who I believe was a frog) turned out to be the only frog and spent the entire time hopping around looking for his fellow frogs to no avail. Oh, and of course there was Kyle pretending to be a pigeon with no partner as well. Thanks Lawline for the fun times!
