Actively Learning Fannon

Close on the heels of the inspiring precedent set by Blair, Jeff dove headfirst into Videography 201 via the FurtherEd TV show. When Melissa and Blair’s schedules were such that Micah needed someone else to operate one of the cameras, Jeff took on the job without hesitation – in fact with excitement and good cheer – despite having no real background with videography while at the same time knowing that his work would be broadcasted on television to the largest city in the nation.

He was an avid student, and was completely receptive to feedback when reviewing the footage after the fact. Since then, he’s filmed four additional segments, including two on the same day as a Learn Session that he taught, and has upped his game tremendously where every aspect of the camera is concerned, from composition to movement to lighting. Thanks, Jeff!

Seeking Creative Solutions 2.Joe

Now Known As Detective Joe!

The Case of the Disappearing Bullet Points!

GC Michele went to Dev. 2.Joe with a mystery that no team member was able to solve for a decade: the disappearing bullet points from the bundle description. Michele had tried everything: using bullets from admin, hitting alt and 7 on number pad simultaneously; cutting and pasting from notepad; and each time the bullets appeared on admin but on the live site she only saw a question mark. Desperate to make the bundle page as dynamic as possible for the launch of FurtherEd Real Estate she hired 2.Joe for the case. At first he said “no problem” until he looked at the code… he knew it would be a challenge, but he was up for the challenge.

Donning his super sleuth hat, he tried code after code and still the bullets disappeared or it could only be done through Q/A. Michele had given up and was ready to throw in the towel, but 2.Joe would not quit and finally discovered a secret formula that would allow any team member to add bullets to a bundle description. Now the bullets are on display beautifully on our new real estate site FurtherEd Real Estate Bundle and will add value to all of our bundles descriptions. Dev. 2.Joe solved the case- kudos to his ability to seek a creative solution

Taking Time to Help Others Julie

Mo doesn’t know what core values Julie did not meet in the last month. She has gone out of her way to train and support three new staffers and to teach them to become successful in the last 3-5 weeks.

Julie is constantly working, even when she’s at home she is always thinking of ways she can improve the sales team or her role as their leader. She goes above and beyond her normal duties on a daily basis to make sure she’s doing whatever she can in her power to help this company grow.

Always taking time to help out with a sale and offering tips which helps Mike F, Mo, and Jennifer to constantly grow and improve!

She is selfless, dedicated, always learning and teaching. In short, she has absolutely been godsent.

Exuding Optimism Mo

Yes, she has a tiara. Awesome, right?

The Schnurm has never seen so many yellow sticky notes in his life. Smily faces, notes of encouragement to herself, oranges with faces drawn on them. Whatever the secret is to being optimistic Mo has cracked the code and The Schnurm want in!

From the first moment he met her she has had this positivity that has not wavered for a moment. You see her smiling, laughing, and just having fun on the phone all day. This type of optimism is infectious and it has especially meant a lot to him during the past week.

Thanks Mo for being you! Always has great energy and laugh even when having to do a double wammy of Blitz calls; making 200+ calls!!

Driven to Find a Better Way Maverick Joe

Anyone who works around the Video Production office has surely heard the iPhone alarms going off about once an hour the last few months as reminders to start the rebroadcasts.

NO MORE! Joe worked out a system that allows us to set a schedule where the rebroadcasts run on their own, making the lives of Melissa, Micah and Jeff much easier. Jeff no longer needs to stop mid conversation to start a rebroadcast.

 Huzanga!!

Gamifying Education

Creative solutions and the better way does not always need to be a brand-new, original idea. Some of the best ideas have come to light by applying scrutiny to the most accepted of conventions and having the bravery to break from the mold. Extra Credits, an incredibly insightful web series about video games, focuses their magnifying glass onto universally accepted methods of educating children. They claim there are “systemic flaws with how we teach kids today” and propose a better–and fun!–way to motivate and educate children: make it like a video game!

Ever played a role-playing game and got hooked on the upwards progress of your character(s)? A child’s (and anyone else’s!) motivation is stronger and more resilient when it is marked by progress and efficiency rather than the fear of failure. Extra Credits proposes: grade like a role playing game. Instead of students struggling every day to maintain an A+ grade and not fall behind, they can start 0 and grow as their education progresses–in points, in levels, in abilities and in knowledge.

This notion of progress could apply to more than just a student’s success in school but also their sense of agency. Many students, especially those from turbulent upbringings, can lose the impression that they are in control of their own choices, decisions and lives. The concepts inherent in games, where your decisions and choices result in tangible outcomes, help impart awareness that a person is in control of his or her own destiny and the choices you make do matter!

These ideas and others are presented in this video in an insightful, practical and entertaining way. A must-see for teachers, students and anyone passionate about education!

Un-Khan-Tested

Salman Khan, former Hedge Fund Advisor turned educator, has revolutionized the way we think about Education. His Khan Academy, which is free to sign up and use, has forced us to look at education from a different perspective. His active approach to learning has helped many student grasp mathematical concepts that were once foreign to them. He has gone from tutoring his cousins in New Orleans, to teaching the world in only a matter of years. His out-of-the-box thinking has forced many of us to re-think how we approach our day-to-day lives. Below is a link to Khan’s 2011 TED talk, which is both informative and enlightening.

The most important aspect of the lecture, in my opinion, is how it ties into the core values of FurtherEd. Salman takes the aspects of Actively Learning, Seeking Creative Solutions, and his Drive to Find a Better Way, and turned into a system that helps others. By doing so, he has given hope to children who otherwise would have fallen by the wayside. At FurtherEd we embody these core values, and practice them on a day-to-day basis. I found this lecture definitely emphasized what FurtherEd is all about, teaching others, and learning more!

FurtherEd Core Values Newsletter – March

Actively Learning Meredith

Meredith has been our resident expert in teachem as well as FurtherEd Tech over the last few months.  Her ability to execute has made her an invaluable piece of our team, especially in helping to diversify FurtherEd from mandatory continuing education to a more general learning platform.

If you were to ask Meredith any question in the world, she will either know the answer or find it out.  Actively learning seems to be her thing!

Seeking Creative Solutions Frank

Frank has been working with Ryan in Customer Support over the past few weeks to broaden and sharpen his skill set to help him grow personally as well as to become a more versatile team member at FurtherEd.  Frank has helped Ryan set reasonable goals while still challenging himself, all while providing the support necessary to keep pushing ahead.  Without Frank’s input, Ryan’s not sure if he’d be taking the ambitious steps.

This is part of a larger effort to improve the company as a whole, by tailoring individual improvement to each employee.  This program is the future of FurtherEd, and couldn’t happen without Frank’s leadership.

Taking Time to Help Others Blair

Where to begin?  Not content to stop with a basic mastery of Wirecast, Blair has thrown herself into every aspect of production, including some of its most challenging projects.  She was assistant videographer for several TV show tapings, and chief videographer for two, taking on the daunting task of maneuvering the camera between the two guest speakers in such a way that the final composition was always up to broadcast standards, and this is a project that would have required her to come in several hours before her scheduled start time.

She then dived into a task that could intimidate any beginner – Bridge the Gap, which she spent two days filming, including the nothing-to-sneeze at task of panning the camera to track speakers in motion.

And this is just the big stuff.  Whether it’s putting mics on speakers in a pinch, preparing images for a webcast, lending her voice talent to an outro for the TV show, or charging batteries when doing so was the one main thing Micah couldn’t get to, Blair has been an indispensable part of keeping the video production machine chugging forward.  She is the definition of this Core Value.

Exuding Optimism Malcolm

Malcolm has heard it all from every attorney (the good and the bad) but he has pushed through his first four weeks and started to develop into an awesome salesperson.

He has learned a lot throughout the process, including getting acclimated to FurtherEd, and it is very easy to hear the difference in his voice from his first week.

Malcolm comes in every day with his head held high and with the hope to learn something new to help improve himself.  He already has a few sales under his belt and he has many more to come.

Driven to Find a Better Way Richard

Rich seems to be everywhere.  In the developers office, in the customer support office, the kitchen; the guy is everywhere.

Call him the scrum master or just plain Rich Hernandez, you could even speak any language and I’m sure Rich would understand what you’re saying.

Rich not only helps in web development project management but he is making our customers say WOW every single day.

For always finding out where we can find free ice cream, here’s to you Rich!

FurtherEd Core Values Newsletter

Actively Learning Blair

When Blair first started at FurtherEd, she expressed interest in video production, and within the past two weeks she has been training with Melissa on webcasting.  Blair jumped in with both feet and has been nothing but determined and positive about the whole experience.  She’s also learning very quickly!

Blair now knows the in’s and out’s of Wirecast, how to operate the cameras, and how to control audio.  Blair exemplifies actively learning because she stepped outside of her comfort zone to learn a new skill.  Great job Blair!

Seeking Creative Solutions Melissa & Micah

Micah and Melissa have shown the patience of saints with the internet situation in their room.  We have continuously worked to improve their internet while streaming courses and it has worked to some extent, but we still have not perfected it.

Thanks to their ability to seek creative solutions by wiring computers from an internet port across the room and know when they are on RCN or FIOS, they have saved many customers and employees time.

I (Frank) promise you a logical and non-creative solution is on its way.  Thanks for your help!

Taking Time to Help Others Mark

This one is obvious.  Debugging is a frustrating and exhausting process.  Most developers prefer to create rather than repair.  When Agile was on the horizon, we knew we would need someone focused on bugs and, as Dave calls them, “fires” while the rest of the team focused on new features.  Mark stepped up to handle bugs and has proven reliable and efficient at this task.

He was also strangely enthusiastic about it.  By doing this alone, he allowed the rest of the team to deliver your new admin.  Without him in that seat Deb Development’s work would never get done.   Ina very short period of time he took on the ruff code that drives FurtherEd and learned it.  He can take anything anyone throws at him without having to refer to the veteran developers.  He also really enjoys Flavors.

Mark really handled this role great and has been very patient and direct with all fixes.  Good work Mark, you are both a scholar and a gentleman.

Exuding Optimism Team Retention

Casey, Stephanie, and Lauren H make up our customer retention team and Sal is glad they do!  They each have an incredible personality that radiates through the phone and into the hearts of our customers.  Not only are they letting our members know how great FurtherEd is and about our offers, but they are on the front-lines of receiving feedback from our members.

Sal can talk about how awesome they are all day, but he wants to focus on the last day in February: They CRUSHED it.  They had 27 sales collectively and had over 200 outbound calls (this was on top of the waves of incoming calls they were handling).

This wasn’t just a freak occurrence; it was a strategically calculated plan by Team Retention.

They worked together to figure out when to send blasts, when to switch lists, and when to follow up on certain leads.  They worked hard all of February, staying optimistic throughout, and had an awesome last day of the month!

Driven to Find a Better Way CPE Crew

It is easy to confuse CPE with standing for Continued Persistence & Effort when you see these guys at work.  Whether it is putting together a schedule of all-day broadcasting, locking down new faculty partnerships, adding new courses to the CPE catalog, or sharing ideas for improving the website and building the CPE brand, the CPE team is always in drive.

Due to their relentless pursuit of finding a better way, CPE is growing in popularity and is on its rapid rise to shake up the world of continuing education.  Soon after that, world domination is in their sights.

Their hard work is setting a great benchmark as we continue to launch and expand into new verticals in the future.

Richard Turere & the Extraordinary Lion Lights

This is the story of Richard Turere of Kenya, who at age 11 came up with a highly innovative solution to the problem of marauding lions. As a result, he was first accepted into Brookhouse International School and later appeared on Ted Talks.

As a FurtherEd team member, I consider it critical at this juncture to challenge oneself to define our mission of “personal growth” in a meaningful way. To me, Richard’s story shows that personal growth can function as a complete spectrum, from basic survival to self-actualization. It began with him trying to save his homestead from lions, and led to a state of having the resources to realize a life-long dream of becoming an aircraft engineer – as basic a need, and as lofty a vision, as any. This is personal growth at its best.

The Art of the Imperfect

When it comes to art, the ability to draw a straight line seems like a fundamental skill to have with nearly any medium. Phil Hansen can’t draw a straight line. But he can create some fantastic artistic pieces. In this short Ted Talk that I shared with everyone this morning, Hansen shows us that even in imperfection, one can find perfection in the most imperfect of circumstances.

Valentine’s Day Presentation

This Valentine’s Day I decided to show a short film entitled “One Step Forward” because it exemplified several of our core values. Initially, I wanted to show the film because of how well the protagonist exuded optimism. After doing a little research, I discovered that the back story behind the making of the movie was actually a perfect exemplar of seeking creative solutions. Instead of simply showing the film as is, I created a teachem course that included the interesting tidbits and facts that I learned about the making of the movie.  Watch the film below!

Patrick Henry Hughes – An Inspirational Person

Patrick Hughes was born with a severe physical impairment that left him without sight but he’s never let that stop him from doing what he enjoys.  He and his Father a truly inspiration people.

Appreciating Our City

For today’s morning meeting, Jeff showed us a video from the group CDZA, which used New York City street names as musical inspirations. When I first saw the video back in December, I didn’t fully “get” all the references. Some of the songs were unfamiliar to me, and some were familiar songs but I didn’t know who sang them. I decided to create a teachem class using the video so that everybody could fully understand why all the songs were chosen.

In the end, Jeff pointed out that the video makes us truly appreciate the city in which we live and work  - there’s inspiration all around us! Watch the video, enjoy, and learn some new music while you’re at it!

Shedding New Light on Creativity

Coke Bottles are transforming Manila’s rural areas. These plastic bottles are now being viewed as a green, cheap and sustainable way to light homes. In rural Manila where homes are often built so close to each other that they have no windows or natural light these bottles are a God send. With electricity unaffordable or unavailable for many families they often have to work, do chores, and eat in near darkness. Now there is light! Take a look at this. Absolutely incredible.

Simple solutions can still be creative. Sometimes it is those who are able to fix the vexing problem with simple yet creative solutions. Minds like these truly embody the core value: seeking creative solutions

TIM: December’s Winner of “Seeking Creative Solutions”

Tim not only supports small businesses, he is really good at making our business larger!

On a regular basis Tim takes what we already have and makes it better. He finishes all of his projects at amazing speeds. With his arrival, the Web Development Team has increased productivity and deployed multiple features that would have never seen the light of day. He has helped the company, mainly the Customer Support Department, in improving searches on admin and changing the sign up page.

One week, a customer left a voicemail on ZS&M phones without leaving his name but only his phone number. If Tim didn’t add the phone search to the admin, it would have been very difficult to find this person. Let’s all pay our dues to Tim to win a seamless lunch because he is a person who supports small businesses!

Modernity as Creativity: How creativity can be measured by the size of a step.

This morning, the FurtherEd staff was asked to consider the definition of “Creativity,” a concept that the company prides itself on and has largely driven the company’s success.

Often times, creativity is thought of narrowly, as displays of masterful, artful, or intellectual manipulation of processes as intended to assist in the overcoming of obstacles.

But sometimes, as we learned this morning, creativity merely means looking at a big gap, and finding the courage and wherewithal to jump it.

Three fine examples of “jumping big gaps” as applications of creativity, as we discussed, are:

Building the transcontinental railroad through the Sierra Nevada mountains, when such a passing seemed theoretically impossibly and practically improbable. At the time of its construction, the government would only compensate the railroad’s builders if the track was laid at a small grade (allowing for trains to ascend via steam power). This stipulation required going through the mountain – a seemingly insurmountable hurdle.

BUT… stronger and creative minds prevailed. Armed with nothing but black powder (the powder used in civil war gunfire) the workers began chipping away, stretching fractions of an inch a day! Determined to increase their speed and break through the mountain walls, the workers turned to a new invention, nitroglycerine, and picked up the speed.

As a result of the railroad, and the subsequent growth of the American West, Teddy Roosevelt (a lover of all things Navy) realized that the new territory required defense! The problem? With all the nation’s shipyards located on the Atlantic seaboard, and the path to the pacific requiring circling half the globe, the U.S. would be unable to support two war efforts, which to Teddy (and prior Presidents) was a necessity.

Teddy faced his own “Sierra Nevadas” in the Panamanian Isthmus. What did he do? Armed with only small shovels, he started digging, eventually engineering bigger shovels, and creating the pathway that now supports naval, freight, and tourism transportation.

With the West now developed and protected, FDR’s period of presidency was defined by the growth of the inner-regions. Due to previous, destructive farming practices, the land in between the coasts had been decimated and left nearly unlivable. The term “Dustbowl” is a literal description of the arid, wind-swept region between Canada and Texas that simply could NOT be developed.

Faced with wind… FDR attempted to block the wind. By constructing shelterbelts, FDR managed to literally block the wind from certain farming areas, and stimulate the redevelopment of the region.

So… how does this reflect the FurtherEd culture? Here at FurtherEd, our creative solutions are akin to those of Lincoln, Teddy, and Franklin – we see gaps, and we jump.

No real estate program in a giant, established real estate market? BUILD IT

No presence in the interior U.S. where other companies are thriving? GO THERE

No content for newly admitted attorneys, one of the greatest in size groups of attorneys? CONSTRUCT IT.

For FurtherEd, staying at the forefront requires being modern; being modern requires creativity; creativity, for us, requires blasting tunnels, building shelterbelts and digging canals until we reach the next step, at which point we use those efforts to conquer whatever comes after.

BLAIR: November’s Winner of “Seeking Creative Solutions”

Blair, from Customer Support, has become a CPE genius

As we work to solidify our Continuing Professional Education vertical (for accountants), a slew of new and hard questions have come into the Customer Support Department.  Blair has not only volunteered to be the GURU of CPE, but she has taken a lot of personal time to get started in learning the NASBA and QAS rules.

Her new found knowledge has been a boost to everyone in CS, and will definitely help as we continue towards the busy season at the end of December.

Many Zombies, Four Groups, One Space Shuttle

Melissa: For my morning presentation, I wanted to plan an activity that would get everyone’s minds and bodies energized for the day. We broke up into 4 teams, the activity was as follows:

The zombie apocalypse has begun, rendering the world inhabitable for humans. Most have fled to a space community, but we here at Lawline have stayed behind for as long as possible to keep working! There is one last shuttle leaving today, and there is only room for one group.

Their Mission:
Each group has 5 minutes to find 3 items in the office that will be most useful for this new space community. The group who come up with the best items will gain access onto the shuttle!

One group brought hand sanitizers, iPad, and matches. The winning group, Team 3, bought a first aid kit, a rubber band ball and a statue of an eagle! The eagle as a keepsake for the US, the ball is a weapon, and who doesn’t need a first aid kit.

The activity’s purpose was to get everyone energized for the day by working as teams towards a common goal. I also wanted everyone to get together and think creatively- each group came up with really great ideas!

Betcha You Can!

Yesterday we were seeking creative solutions as Joe challenged the group to several bar bets. The first bet was the hat trick , which Kyle caught on to in the middle of it and ruined the surprise.
Next up was the money count down  where Joe exacted his revenge on Kyle for the aforementioned blunder.
After that, Joe was able to get water from a plate to a glass without touching the plate or the water. We couldn’t even use a straw. That truick involved a pack of match. And finally, the whiskey vs water trick! You had a glass of whiskey and a glass of water and the task was to switch the liquids without pouring it out.
Click the links below and watch the video on how to solve these neat tricks.

Moral of the story: If you have the opportunity, incorporate fire into your morning meeting.

SAL: October’s Winner of “Seeking Creative Solutions”

You may not know this, but Sal moonlights as an artist in his free time. After we found out, he became our in-house artist.

The use of a blackboard as a background for FurtherEd video programs opened up numerous opportunities to explore ways of making our content stand out.  In a testament to the creative strength of our team, everyone at the company has brought ideas to the table on how this can be done.

No matter the concept, Sal has brought to the fore his ever-improving abilities as an artist.  From elaborate backgrounds to crisp renditions of the Lawline logo, the stellar nature of his work has been matched only by his attitude and his receptivity to feedback.

Sal is not only an artist but a curious and flexible one at that!

All it took was video production discussing the merits of size, shape and concept of the background during the first few shows and Sal creatively found a way to both maintain the artistic integrity of his work while also acceding to the unique needs of video production picture quality-not an easy compromise by any measure, and certainly a feat on top of all of his marketing duties.

JOE: September’s Winner of “Seeking Creative Solutions”

It recently became clear to us that broadening our technology would be a strong part of our future.  We thought if we could replicate the course center so anyone could use it to create their own learning platform, the sky would be the limit.

At that point there was no teachem and no real plan of attack; just a blank canvas.  Dave asked Joe if he wanted to try to replicate the Lawline Course Center and without much clear direction Joe dove head first into the project.

There were many challenges during the process to perfect this project, and it was Joe’s quick thinking on his feet that got teachem.com to what you see today.

This is our Story of Hurricane Sandy

It really did not hit us until late Thursday that Sandy was actually coming and could cause some major problems for the company.  First, it could not come at a worse time for Lawline.com. It was hitting on the last 3 days of the deadline for Virginia attorneys. Due to the new live CLE requirements, we had close to 15 live webcasts scheduled during this period.  Not to mention, thousands of attorneys who could potentially watch on-demand courses into the wee hours of the night.  Also, our servers are hosted by Amazon’s AWS platform which is located in Virginia which was also being hit by the storm. We just had issues with AWS the week before when they had a glitch and thousands of websites including ours were down for half a day. So we needed to prepare for it to go down again.  Our server administrator was away on a trip he planned months ago, with no internet access.

Things went into motion on Friday. First we had some of our customer service team bring home phones so they could easily plug them into the internet to answer calls.  The development team sat down and agreed we had to move our servers to the AWS California region, but unfortunately, it is not that same simple process as moving the servers within Virginia.  While we did not plan ahead for the webcasts, we were lucky enough to have someone travel to the office on Sunday to get the equipment needed to live stream the programs from home.  Then another team member walked 5 miles each way on Monday morning so he could get his laptop to moderate the webcasts.  Talk about a dedicated team.

When it became clear on Sunday the transit system was closing down, things moved into high gear.  Luckily, the company has daily 8:30 am huddles, so we just put the huddle online.  We planned a company wide meeting on a Skype group and then broke-out into departmental group chats.

The bigger issue over the weekend was the servers.  We were having multiple challenges moving them across the country.  Luckily, our lead developer did not let that stop him. In between watching his kids at dance recital and doing errands to prepare his family for the storm, he was working on the server move.  Our system adminstrator came back early from his vacation and helped us with the final touches late Sunday night.  We were ready. If the site went down we could have it up in California within 15 minutes.  The company meeting was set for 8:30 am. The equipment was ready to go for live streaming.  Phones were all across the tri-state area to help customers. All of our planning was in place.

On Monday morning, it was quite inspiring watching the team, one by one, sign on to our skype chat.  Everyone chimed in. People were determined. We had our assignments.  There was also a lot of humor. Lots of excitement. We had a cause. We had a mission. We were not going to fail.

The day went without a hitch. We were able to communicate with our customers via phone and email. We were able to do all of our webcasts each with hundreds of people on them and the last one ending at 9pm.

The storm devastated parts of NYC, particularly in lower Manhattan where our office is located.  As of today, there is no power in our building, there is massive flooding, and the the subway is still out.  It is clear that we will not be in the office so fast, but we we all have our roles and will continue to serve our customers.  This has been an eye opening experience on how virtual everything has really become.  While we missed the in-person communication, in some ways we were communicating better as company.

We recently put on our Lawconomy event with over 1000 people attending, and received the most amazing compliment from one of our presenters that can be read here.  We have received several emails from our customers and I have copied one below that really touched me.  We are making a difference. We are here to do great things. This past week has shown nothing will stop us in our cause to change the way people learn.

From a Virginia Customer
“It was incredible what Lawline was able to pull off yesterday, from Sunday Oct 28 through Monday Oct 29, during Hurricane Sandy. Lawline was able to conduct live interactive and pre-recorded programming from the New York area to the Northern Virginia area, to enable many lawyers to meet CLE deadlines through a devastating storm. Your customer support members were also on call and provided immediate responses to any inquiries. Thank you and congratulations for an impressive technical and human resources business accomplishment.”

Mind-Blowing Videos

Joe: I’ve always loved music videos, especially when they are a bit inspired. Today was a tribute to seeking creative solutions, so I selected a handful of music videos that were presented with a unique problem that they had to solve in an out-of-the-box way. Whether it was telling a story from a new perspective, paying tribute to another artists, or just remaining true to your original concept while staying in budget, each video was able to figure out a brilliant solution.

Remember: If you can’t move the floor, move the walls.

JEFF R: August’s Winner of the “Seeking Creative Solutions”

Jeff decided after all Q2 meetings with employees to Seek A Creative Solution in coming up with a Quarterly Plan.

After the last quarterly review meetings Jeff left without feeling complete.  He felt there was something missing from his one on one conversations with employees.  As we all know, Jeff is not one to let a problem repeat itself.

Right away, Jeff started working on a solution and he found a great one.  He worked with everyone to come up with 60 day goals for each person.  He put it on paper and on the bottom added the company goals in the 60 day plan so each person could see how their goals tie into the company goals.

Now we all have clear direction as to what needs to be completed before the big October 31st deadline.  Now that is a creative solution!

Money Doesn’t Work The Way You Think.

Ryan: Motivation is a tricky subject for many people, especially for employers and employees. Traditional thinking in a business setting dictates that higher pay leads to higher quality work, and that this type of reward incentive is universal. However, in anyplace with any modicum of innovation and creativity, this line of thinking is erroneous.

For any task that requires even rudimentary critical thinking skills, motivation is dictated more by the often internalized feelings and needs of employees. The people with the best creative output tend to be those who are self-directed, those who are allowed to achieve mastery, and those who feel that their work is not only improving themselves and their organization, but improving life for people around the world.

All You Need Is Heart

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

Lauren: For my presentation this morning I shared the story of South African Olympian/Paralympian Oscar Pistorious. Pistorious was born with fibular hemimelia and had his legs amputated as a baby. Despite his disability he has trained to become a great runner and athlete through the use of his Cheetah Flex-Foot prosthetic. This year at the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games he became the first person to qualify in both the Olympics and Paralympics. In the Olympic Men’s 400m he took second in the first heat and qualified for the semi-finals. He is an inspiring athlete and his story reflects some of Lawline’s core values: seeking creative solutions, driven to find a better way, and exuding optimism.

TODD : July’s Winner of the “Seeking Creative Solutions”

Todd's new ticketing system for live events promises to be a Lawline game changer.

Congratulations to the Web Development Department for their third straight victory for Seeking Creative Solutions.

This month, Todd takes the award for spearheading the live event ticketing system.  It has always been a dream to have thousands of attendees at our live events, and now we are a giant step closer! Todd’s ability to create the entire system of assigning codes to each customer, then testing the system during Pizza Thursdays, has set us up to make that dream become a reality in the near future.

Can You See What You Hear?

“A big, old, hungry dog appeared at our door every morning.” Find the color. Give up? The answer is Gold.

In Monday’s morning presentation, Brandon decided to challenge the company to think outside the box. In the presentation, Brandon read 10 sentences which had hidden colors in each of them. The goal was to demonstrate that within everyday things, such as reading sentences, there can be hidden messages, or something you may have missed. In any situation you encounter, take time, analyze every word for what it is and hopefully you won’t miss the color.

Examples

  • The Brazilian student Paulo lives around the corner from us.
  • The Austrian physicist Wolfgang Pauli lacked the requisite documents to enter the U.S.
  • You shouldn’t sell this fossil very cheaply because it is a rare specimen.

In The Eyes Of The Beholders

Nancy: For my morning presentation today, a little birdie whispered in my ear, and I was able to get ahold of “Zoom,” by Istvan Banyai. A rather uneventful book, but filled with pictures. No text, just pictures. It’s actually a pretty cool book even without the need for words. Each page is a picture, and each picture progressively zooms out until you get a pinprick of an Earth (the planet) on a sheet of black. The point of the activity is the photocopy the pictures, scramble them up — and then put them back in chronological order.

Since each picture gives you small clues as to its previous picture, it takes awhile, but with some creative thinking and collaboration, you can make it happen.

So everyone got 2 pictures and we all had one conference table. Many heated collaborations and conversations later, the (approximately) 30 page spread was laid out on the table and we went through it carefully, trying to determine the exact order. About 15 minutes later, we had it all assembled! And success! Seeking creative solutions and driven to find a better way. How did we seek creative solutions? It takes a bit of creativity to think outside the box and see the “bigger” picture — which, in this case, was actually the next image in the ensemble. Driven to find a better way? If the shoe don’t fit, find another one. There were definitely a few hiccups where the picture “worked,” but didn’t exactly work and so we would have to find a better option.

But, we got it! So yay teamwork! And yay for perspective images!

Teamwork!!

JOE: June’s Winner of the “Seeking Creative Solutions”

Joe, shown above, has become certified in solutionitics. Todd, missing from this photo, has been certified since January 2011.

Congratulations to the Web Development Department for winning Seeking Creative Solutions in back-to-back months.

Last month they were nominated for their efforts in launching Lawline 2.0, a new design of our site and learning platform.  This month they are being recognized for improving our accounting platform for continuing professional education.

After auditing the new CPE standards required by the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy, the CPE team realized there were many changes needed in our website to properly certify courses and test users.  Joe sat down with them in order to address all proposed changes, and within hours a plan was concocted to tackle the project.

Thanks to Joe and Todd’s work, the site will soon have every course living up to NASBA’s standards!  They are true creative solutionists.

I Bet You Can

Joe: This morning I presented six bets you will never lose. While that is not necessarily true, the odds are certainly in your favor. The secret to winning almost every bet lies in simplicity and seeking creative solutions. The answer is right there in front of you, you just have to think outside the box a little bit.

Here is the video that I pulled the bets from:

Born To Fly

A few weekends ago, I visited the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and I came across a very inspiring story. It is one the exemplifies one of our core values, Seeking Creative Solutions.

Ellen Church was a nurse and was certified to be pilot. She always loved aeroplanes but when she applied to become a pilot, they told her no because she wasn’t a man. However she found a way to overcome the obstacle by becoming the first stewardess. Ellen convinced the owner of Boeing that nurses would be a wonderful idea to calm passengers. The rest is history…

May Spotlight: SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS-Web Development

The new site may have launched in June, but countless hours in May went into the design and creation of Lawline 2.0.  Our web development team stayed late, came in early, and sought creative solutions the entire way.

There were many days in May where emails would be going back and forth between developers, David, and Jeff at ridiculous hours of the night or morning to ensure the launch was done as soon as possible.  The creation of Lawline 2.0 has created a buzz that is not limited to our office, but our customers, industry, and the world.

Without this crew, I’m not sure what we would do.  So here’s to you, Web Developers!

April Spotlight: Corey- SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

Corey, who has been with Lawline.com since June 2011, has been a main stay on top of the sales leaderboard every month.

Recently, Corey’s gone out of his way to research and plan ways for improving the contact rate with leads for the sales team.  This includes sending timely e-mails and teaming up with marketing to ensure all channels are always on the same page.

Corey has helped to main stream the sales process by guiding newer salespeople toward success.  Because of this, the department has reached record numbers, and has also gotten him involved in interactions with current customers for renewals!

Scavenger Hunt

Something you use everyday…
Something round…
Something straight…
Something from the kitchen…
Something flexible/stretchy…
Something created in the 1800s…

This morning, 5 teams had one minute to gather these items in Symphonie‘s Scavenger Hunt. After all these items were gathered, they had two minutes to create a device that will end world hunger and then present to others what each other came up with.
Afterwards, they were treated to her Raspberry Chocolate Banana Bread muffin. YUMMY!

Symphonie: It was nice to see the team so hyped about this activity and come together to make this work. I loved how everyone was taking it so seriously and determined to get the job done. This makes me reflect on how we work here at Lawline.com, with determination yet having fun doing it cause we love to be here!

I incorporated all of the 5 Core Values we have into a Scavenger Hunt:
The Scavenger Hunt is an Actively Learning Tool, which brings us together to Help Each Other Seek Creative Solutions, while Exuding Optimism for your team to win. Driven to be better comes into play for the next scavenger hunt we participate in the near future.

72 Hours To Start A Business…Easy!

Nancy: We’re doing really great and fantastic things at Lawline. We’re creating a new website, we’re seeing new faces around the office….We’re just altogether getting off to a really great chapter. I originally had another morning presentation prepared, but I saw this video about SXSW and I just thought, “Wow, this is totally like what we’re doing here. They’re innovating new things and inspiring new creations and…well, gee, isn’t that just like what we do here.”

The essence of this video is a great idea called a Startup Bus. SXSW sponsored a bus, filled with strangers, and they get a 72 hour bus ride to SXSW. On the bus ride, the strangers — more or less entrepreneurs — pitch ideas at one another. People who share a similar vision group off and get started on working up a mobile app. The goal is to get a working mobile app and marketing pitch up and running and live by the time they hit SXSW. Once they arrive at SXSW, the groups are allowed a few hours to finalize their product, finalize their pitches, and then present it to a panel of judges. The group that wins gets the funding for their app and a chance to start their own company.

Which is a lot like what we’re doing here. A bunch of motivated people, working towards a common goal, to create a bigger and better product or item to help the rest of the world. A lot can be accomplished in 72 hours. But that’s not the point. Because nothing can be accomplished without people who share a common vision that are driven to find a better way.

Puzzling Pictures

Trisha: 1) A couple of weeks ago I had the company split up into four teams. Once the teams were formed we started the game of guessing what the picture is from a really close up picture of it. I called the game mystery picture game but it probably has other names. Basically I took pictures of objects from a far so you knew what the object is and then really close up. Teams had to guess what each item was from the picture. It’s pretty interesting to see what people know and guess.

2) Yesterday morning I had the team yet again split up into four teams. Once the teams were set, I explained what they where in for. I decided to take an idea from MTV. Where we had the teams figure out puzzles to move on to the next puzzle. The first puzzle was a math one where all the columns and rows had to equal the same number. Once I checked their answers, they where able to move onto the word search. After I checked the word search , the logical question was up. The logical question was my last question and it definitely took the longest. Nobody could get it in time but it was great seeing everyone work together and coming up with different ways to answer each question.

The Creating & Sharing Of Awe

This morning, Ryan showed a video on Jason Silva speaking at the PSFK Conference that took place in New York City a few months ago.

Ryan: Jason Silva is a futurist and philosopher that has become famous through his short form videos that have been called “Movie Trailers for Ideas” and “Shots of intellectual espresso.” This talk specifically concentrates on ideas and imagination and how creative solutions, today more than ever, can be thought up and executed in real time. He then goes from talking about the process of being creative and “connecting the dots” to seeing how our ideas that are manifested in the real world are a continuation of natural patterns that are all around us every day of our lives.

March Spotlight: Jeff – SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

When the sales team complained that many of the people on the Illinois list no longer worked at the firm Jeff took immediate action.  Doing is usual working through late in the night he came up with a solution that the sales team can easily search the person in the firm and see if they still work there.

The goal is to save time and only focus on the right people.  What was so great about it in true Jeff fashion he sent a email with screen shots diagraming exactly how to use this feature in the CRM.  Hope this goes a long way!

Alter Ego

Ever wonder who you would be in a parallel universe? You could be just about anyone. A firefighter, intergalactic trader, hero or villain.

Rob had just two questions for us (Well technically, it is four questions):
-If you could do any job at Lawline.com, what would it be? Why?
-If you had to choose someone to do your job, who would it be? Why?

With this question, people had to think hard considering they love the job they are doing. After some time, a majority would like to be a Program Attorney or Web Developer. The reasons behind choosing program attorney is that they would like to organize events, speak with attorney, gotten through law school and educate others. As for Web Developer, it would allow those to be creative.
When it came to choosing those to cover their position, it seemed everyone was trust-worthy in performing the job.

Pay Attention

In yesterday’s morning presentation, Sal showed a short video of sleight-of-hand artist Apollo Robbins manipulating someone’s focus in order to steal several items from them.

Sal: This video demonstrates how humans are keen on focusing their energy on one particular event. We often find ourselves multitasking while answering phones, talking to others, or even walking down the street looking at our smartphones. By nature, we are very good at focusing our attention on one thing and excelling in a particular goal. I feel that by acknowledging the fact that we cannot put all of our energy into all of our actions while multitasking we can enhance our productivity. Instead of loading our plate and trying to tackle everything at once, we can slow down to complete goals and solve problems one by one.

“Fill In The Blank”

Shark or Temple..can't tell.

This past Friday morning, Sal & Alex went on an adventure! They were the main stars in Ken’s Improv game called “Fill In The Blank”.

The audience (Lawline.com employees) gave them three things:
1. Location (Cancun)
2 Relationship (Father & Son)
3.an object they are looking for (A Mayan temple)

By pointing to us during various times, they were given blank suggestions and went with it. Sal apparently was a very tall four-year old kid who carried a spear which he left at the dog park. His father, Alex, led his child through shark-invested waters and seemed to not be quite happy with his son’s mistakes.

The purpose achieved: Thinking outside the box, thinking on their feet and having fun.

Charades!

Outside the door of the idea room, two things could be heard: a minute long silence and then an outburst of phrases. This morning, we played Lawline.com-themed Charades.

After being split into two groups, a member from each group picked from a bag one of many written pieces of paper which Trisha wrote. After reading it, it was Action, Set, Go with all the best silent acting that would rival Charlie Chaplin.

Gamal’s impression of Jeff R.‘ was spot on with his thinking stance. For Team 1 to guess Sales Team, all Stephanie did was smile and laugh which in turn does show exuding optimism. Chris wasn’t too clear at first with his Taking Time to Help Others as he was trying to play a scene from Cliffhanger. However, his second scene was easier to figure.

All in all, both team got every gesture except one so Team 1 was the victor.  Congrats to Team 1!

Pulse

This morning, Trisha had the team play the Pulse game.

The Pulse game entitles first to have a coin and a small ball. In this case, we used Ann’s rubberband ball. Then everyone was split into two equal lines facing each other across the room.  Each line held their teammate’s hands beside them.  The first person of each line, Chris and Julie,  had their eyes open, while everyone else had their heads down and eyes closed. In between the last two people of each line, Sean & Jeff R, is a chair with the rubber band ball sitting on it.

When Trisha flipped the coin on heads, Chris and Julie had to squeeze the hand of the next person and it went down the line, like an electric current.  Sean and Jeff R would try grab the ball before each other.  The first person to grab the ball got a point for their team.

Basically this game was another form of communication and just a fun way to start the day because everyone got competitive trying to beat the other team to get the ball.

The Traveler’s Dilemma

Jeff F(II): Today I asked the Lawline team to work through an exercise known as the traveler’s dilemma- a variant of the popular game theory thought exercise, the prisoner’s dilemma.

In pairs, everyone was asked to choose between either $2 or $3, knowing that if both chose the same amount, both would receive that amount.  However, if the amounts differed, the person choosing $2 would be rewarded with $4 and the person choosing $3 would be reduced to $1.  The paradox of the exercise is that the most rational decision (choosing $2 since it always yields the highest individual result) does not actually yield the highest values.

Watching the game play out, what was most striking wasn’t the decisions people were making but rather why they were being made.  A sense of altruism and what worked best for the pair was evident and this led some pairs both choose $3, the optimal outcome.  This is a great example of being driven to find a better way.  Though some chose $3 because it may have seemed to be the higher yielding value, some chose it simply because they realized that you don’t always have to be rational, and working together and trusting in one another, a better overall result can be achieved.

Those Smart Dingbats

Two heads are better than one so many together would solve quicker, right? Last Friday, I put that theory to the test with some brain teasers called Dingbats.

Dingbat puzzles, not to be confused with a type of font, are word puzzles that represent a phrase or saying.  These puzzle promote lateral thinking. After being divided into two, Team Blue and Team Green took turns picking a slip out of a bag and had 45 seconds to solve the puzzle. Some were very easy and others had both groups scratching their heads. Eventually the game became a tie so a sudden death match round took place. Team Blue scored the win with Joe’s math expertise.

See if you’re able to solve these:

  • GNIKOOL
  • 10001000
  • SYMPHON
  • our death match question: GR304.8mmAVE

February Spotlight: Gamal – SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

Gamal has always been a go-to person when it comes to creative ideas.

Most recently, he was a major factor in the idea generation of the Lawline landing pages (see the new tiers pages: http://www.lawline.com/gb), as well as a marketing fax to better communicate with potential customers and improve the sales process.

Further, Gamal has actively found ways to best segment our sales leads and lists and issue leads among the staff for optimal success.

Pick Your Song

Yesterday morning, we got in tune with ourselves to pick our song.

Nancy: From ancient Mayan circle chants (that may or may not be true) to the modern industrial sounds of Skrillex and dubstep, music plays an integral part of any culture or society. I always keep a little saying in the back of my head, “Looking at someone’s music player is like looking into a little piece of their soul,” and true to that, I did have one friend who was very shy and refused to let me see her iPod when I asked her if I could take a look. So for my morning presentation, I decided to have us all play a little game called “Pick Your Song.” It involves a bit of critical thinking and creativity, but also helps you understand the people on your team (or in your company) a little better.

The game itself is simple enough. You have a bunch of statements or questions (“Name your favorite ice cream flavor” or “What’s the weather like today?”) and you hand them out randomly to the people in your group. They all get a few minutes to think of a song that responds to the statement or question. For example: “What’s your favorite mode of transportation?” “Yellow Submarine, by The Beatles.” And then we go around in a circle and share our questions and answers. It’s a nice way of seeing what other people’s music tastes are and also the explanations that they give to song if the title doesn’t exactly answer the statement or question. One colleague received the question, “Who is your best friend?” and she responded with “Don’t Stop Believing, by Journey” because the song reminds her of her best friends and they always sing and enjoy that song together. The best part was that this game really displayed one of our core values, which is seeking creative solutions. We constantly have to find creative solutions for our questions, and in this case, we had to use song titles in order to get there.

So great exercise to get our brains moving and hopefully thinking of that song gave everyone a pleasant little thrill to start off the day!

Excerpts from the game:

  • Favorite Time of Day  -  AM to PM (Christine Milan)
  • Best Advice You Can Give  -  Lose Yourself (Eminem)
  • My Motto  - Why Should I Worry(from Oliver & Company)
  • Thought of the Day – What A Wonderful World (Louis Armstrong)

Do you know Ben, Dan, Pat, or Sam?

A wildflower clock

Early Monday morning, I decided to have the team activate their thinking caps.

We played a game called Ben, Dan, Pat & Sam. The object of the game is to guess the word after receiving part of a sentence or a clue. The word had to begin with Ben, Dan, Pat, or Sam. After splitting into two teams, we flipped a coin to see which would go. Team 1 won by calling heads.

A Flat-bottom Chinese Boat

The levels ranged from easy to hard with a final round. Being Lawline.com, the teams started with Medium but stuck with Hard all the way through. (We do love challenges here!) Each team had thirty seconds to solve the clue or risk having the other team steal. It was neck to neck but in the end, it was Team 2 who came through during the final round with a 10 point lead!

Here are some of the clues and their answers:

  • Petroleum Ether  (BENzene)
  • Knee Cap           (PATella)

Being Just Crazy Enough

This morning Casey wanted to show a humorous approach on how to overcome mental illness.

Joshua Walters, a man who is bipolar, shares his stories and views on finding the right balance between medicating your craziness away and powering through your illness to find your creativity and drive. We’ve all seen the stories of people overcoming physical disabilities. When it comes to mental illness awareness, sometimes these issues are swept under the rug. Although we all may not suffer from any mental illness, Joshua Walters inspires us to be creative and driven. He tells us embrace the crazy that is inside of all of us because without that crazy, how will we ever persevere?

♦ ♣Card Array♥ ♠

Yesterday morning, Sean wanted everyone to play this card game in order to work on seeking creative solutions.

We had four teams and four decks of cards. Two teams formed an alliance with the task for one group to arrange all the shuffle cards in ascending order and the other in descending order. Each person were given random amount of cards face down in their hands. Chris mentioned what helped was that his group created a strategy before arranging. When his group were done, they helped their ally finish.

Since everyone had different cards they had to work together as a team to place the cards in numerical order. There was really good communication from both teams and Sean felt like that was the key to winning the game. Once the winning team was on the same page they were able to complete the task in only a matter of seconds.
