Seeking creative solutions

January Spotlight: Corey – SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

In October 2011, Lawline.com released its newest subscription form of Lifetime CLE. Priced at $799, it opened up a great opportunity for customers to receive our product at a low cost. Though it is a great offer, two things brought on a challenge

  1. Change is always hard, and we have focused on selling 1-2 year subscriptions over the past few years.
  2. Though the price is small for lifetime, it is still a large upfront cost.

Corey saw this as a great opportunity, however, to reach his monthly goals at a faster rate. For customers that purchased the unlimited subscriptions, he went for upgrades. For customers that were interested, he carried the conversation forward by introducing the product. He did not push the product toward anyone, rather, he creatively wove the new price and offer into his discussions and used his intuition to target opportunities.

This has led him to a team leading amount of lifetime sales, along with keeping him atop the leaderboards over the past few months. Over the past few months Corey has continuously set the bar for the Lawline sales team through following his creative intuition on the phone in optimizing his performance with Lifetime CLE.

Believe In Yourself

Last Friday, Alex’s presentation were based on optimism and seeking creative solutions.

Alex: No video sums up optimism more than a video of a little boy learning to ride a bike and the resulting speech he gives after, telling every kid that “If you can’t do it, you keep trying until you can!”.

Click the cute kid below to believe in yourself!

I showed another video of Ellie Goulding which she came up with a way to successfully market her new album “Lights” through different marketing channels..  The video is an interactive music experience. If you retweet the link, your twitter name, and picture it will show up in the video in live time. That in turn encourages people to share the video.  Whether in marketing or sales or any other position, we can all learn from a little creative solution seeking.

Lawline.com Pictionary

Lead Program Attorney Kyle R. led yesterday’s morning meeting with a game of Lawline.com Pictionary! This activity was a chance to let everyone at Lawline to show off their artistic talent or lack thereof. It also gave everyone a chance to see how they view Lawline. It is easy to think of a object or an activity but drawing it is a completely different story. However, Jeff F. on Team 1 shined with his interpretation of one of Lawline.com’s core values – “Taking Time to Help Others”. Jeff drew a person hanging on a cliff with another person helping them up. Of course everyone was able to spot one of our core values when they saw it. For Lifetime Learning, he drew a cradle that pointed to a grave surrounded by books.

On Team 2, most of the team members took turns drawing things from Program Attorney(that resembled Kyle strangely) to Actively Learning(eyes popping out to a book) to Champs(our fav deli).
Frank’s interesting version of Red Bull wasn’t caught on immediately but he redeemed himself with his drawing of Live Events.

Overall Team 2 won by two points but everyone really showed how well they knew Lawline.com.

Lawline Team Culture – Post 7 of 20

PLAID

During each interview Lawline.com employees will measure 5 core qualities of the candidate. These qualities are not something that will change or improve much if the candidate is brought on for the position. A sheet of paper with each quality is given to each interviewer to fill out following the interview.

PLAID is the acronym we use.

Professionalism
Likeable
Articulate
Intelligence
Driven

Each candidate is scored on a 1-5 scale, with 5 being the highest score. Professionalism, likeable, and articulate do not have specific questions to rate each candidate. These are subjective to each interviewer and are scored based on the candidate’s performance during the interview. One question we put on each employee’s PLAID form to fill out during the interview is ‘Would you want to work with this person?’.

Intelligence is based off of the behavioral questions asked during the interview. We use many examples to see what the candidate would do in real Lawline scenarios such as assisting customers. Driven is very similar with behavioral questions, but it is also based upon a candidate’s resume (and extracurricular participation in college if an entry level candidate).

Through using PLAID, we have raised the quality of new employees. We also streamlined part of our hiring process to ensure there is a standard to go by.

PLAID has allowed our company culture to evolve and become stronger with the hiring of each new employee!

Lawline Team Culture Series – Post 3 of 20

Lawline.com Core Values

What makes Lawline’s Core Values unique?

Our Core Values were created over time and took many different versions to finally come up with the list of five. It began when we started developing our hiring and application process. We tried to brainstorm the qualities our top employees embodied which would then be used to recruit the same type of “A Players”.

David came back with an idea of using the acronym “LAIDS”, which stood for: Likeable, Articulate, Intelligent, Driven, and Sociable. Each of our top employees scored a 5 out of 5 on the LAIDS scale. This helped our recruiting process because after each interview, the interviewee would have to score the candidate on LAIDS.

After improving the hiring process with this scoring technique, we sat down and started brainstorming our Core Values from LAIDS. The goal of having our Core Values has been to hire candidates who we feel embody these values on a daily basis, even if they do not realize it. We finalized the following:

- Actively Learning
- Seeking Creative Solutions
- Taking Time to Help Others
- Exuding Optimism
- Driven to Find a Better Way

To make this official, new hires are given a Core Values Card with their name on it which they are to hold onto daily. We also have our Core Values hung up in our offices (in the Idea Room which is where the snacks and coffee are located) for everyone to see. Every month a Core Values Newsletter is printed up, highlighting employees who have gone above and beyond the Core Values.

Lawline Team Culture Series – Post 1 of 20

On January 24th, 2012, President and CEO of Lawline.com, David Schnurman, presented “10 Keys to Creating an Amazing Team Culture” in New York City. The event turned out to be a great success with everyone in attendance participating and collaborating on ideas used by Lawline.com. Over the next 20 days I will be highlighting main points from the lecture and how it is used by Lawline.com.

The Jolt

Every morning Lawline.com holds a company “Huddle” to start the day at 8:30am. A different employee is assigned to present each morning for 5 minutes to get the day started before breaking out into departmental meetings. It is common for an employee to perform a Jolt to start the day and get their creative juices flowing.

A Jolt is a brief exercise moderated by the presenter prior to going into their presentation. Before presenting the “10 Keys to Creating an Amazing Team Culture”, David started by having everyone in attendance stand and face the person next to them. The Jolt he had everyone perform was “The 3 Handshakes.” The first step of the Jolt was to shake the person’s hand next to you as if you were the shyest person in the world. Next, you shook their hand as if you were the most arrogant person in the world. And finally, you shook the person’s hand next to you as if it were your best friend who you had not seen in ten years.

This allowed everyone to get acquainted in a much different way, got everyone laughing, and set the tone for the evening’s presentation.

Next time your giving a presentation, try a Jolt! To learn more about Jolts check out the book “Jolts! Activities to Wake Up and Engage Your Participants” by Sivasailam “Thiagi” Thiagarajan and Tracy Tagliati.

Which Switch Switches On Which??

Lightbulb Riddle

Sal got our noggins quite alert on this fine Monday morning.

Sal: “I think a great way to start the morning off is by doing an interesting brain teaser that gets our minds working. I always enjoyed riddles and brain teasers, so I presented everyone at Lawline with one of my favorites:
You are down at the bottom of a set of stairs, with three light switches by you. There are three light bulbs at the top of the stairs. You want to figure out which switch controls which light bulb. You cannot see any light at the top of the stairs from where you are standing, and you can only go up once to check the lights. You can also switch the lights on and off as many times as you want. What do you do to find out which switch controls which light bulb?

Answer: Turn on 2 light bulbs and leave them on for several minutes. Turn one off, and go upstairs and check the light bulbs. The light that is on corresponds to the switch you left on. There should be two remaining lights that are both off. The light bulb that is hotter corresponds to the switch you turned on then off. The remaining light bulb should be cool, and it corresponds to the switch that you did not turn on.

I feel that this riddle touched on our values of actively learning, seeking creative solutions, driven to find a better way, exuding optimism (riddles can be very frustrating at times), and taking time to help others. Everyone seemed very engaged trying to formulate the solution. “

I’m A Star!

Personalized Hollywood Star

On Friday the 13th, Anna hosted a fun guessing game called Celebrity.

The object of the game was to guess which celebrity’s picture was taped to one’s back. Everyone was allowed to ask three questions with their partners without outright asking the name. If one or both could not guess who they were, it was time to switch to a new partner.

Few people were able to figure out in the first round. For example, Joe was able to guess he was Kim Kardashian in less than a minute.
For others, it took a few rounds like Chris who couldn’t determine that Harry Potter was not real but not a cartoon. He got the wizard wonder eventually.

Overall, this was a fun and puzzling game.

Yes, and the Cobra…

For today’s morning presentation, Nancy decided to do something a little different.
Nancy: I usually work in production, but this week was put into customer service to help guests figure out issues for the end of the year. I’ve never been in customer service before. So to say it was an experience is a bit….understated.
I’ve been basically running around asking everyone for help and trying to assist guests efficiently. Everyone was the best when it come to helping me out, but it required a lot of improvisation and thinking on the spot; a lot of quick answers and quick responses to be as helpful as possible while not coming across as blatantly stalling. Since I spend most of my time reading Bossypants by Tina Fey — I decided to take a leaf from her book: Improv. And I picked out a common improv game called “Yes, and…”

“Yes, and…” requires the group to circle around and then one person is given a statement. The next person in the circle has to respond to the statement with “Yes, and…” and then add on his or her own statement. This continues until the circle completes (or it can continue on for quite a few rounds as the story gets more and more extravagant). It’s a great way to see how people’s minds work and also a great way to exude optimism and emphasize the importance of saying “Yes.” Too often ideas aren’t developed because they aren’t too great in their infancy; by saying “yes, and…” we say “yes, we accept that idea, and let’s see how we can build on it and brainstorm to make it better.”
So it was great to see how the team brainstormed and built up ideas and came up with a crazy story or scenario just by saying “Yes, and…” We went from a cobra, to a mongoose, to Samuel L. Jackson, to a shark, and ended up eBay. All in all, I think it was a pretty good creative exercise at the end of the day!

Dinosaur!

Lawline was roaring with creativity last Thursday.

Frank gave us the task to build a Dinosaur model and present a performance to show what is special about it. After being broken up into three groups, each group had a bag of random supplies such as feathers, toothpicks, and chenille sticks.

With only 5 minutes given  to create it, each team came up with a model along with a  story of how they moved and ate. One dinosaur, the Taurantasauras, ate everything and flew. Its tail inspired the Nike logo. The Mardigrasorous was on a spirit liquid diet and stayed low to the ground. Mardigrasorous was present with a rap (by CEO Dave) and beatboxing (by Web Developer Joe). Another dinosaur was able to fly and shoot lasers from his eyes.

It was great to see the team work and imagination of everyone come together! In the end, the team who build Taurantasauras won the challenge. Congrats to them!

Lean On Me

Trisha made everyone rely on each other Thursday morning.

She had groups of two sit down on the floor sitting back to back. Once our backs were fully touching, we inter loop your arms. The objective was to get up with out separating our backs or using our hands. Our hands cannot touch the floor or anything else.

What this did was show us how to work with another person that you cannot really see or show how to do something. You must your minds to work out a way to get up. You are creatively thinking and working with each other to find the best solution.

…Because All Mermaids Need Them

On Wednesday, Frank asked everyone to give their best pitch.

He split everyone into 3 groups and presented a challenge to sell an item to a specific target through a commercial. The problem was the appraisers had trouble selling their products.  Each group were given a list of items & target groups to choose from. Coincidentally each group, although in different rooms, picked mermaids to sell to. Mermaids were the most difficult target group on the list and we just love challenges here at Lawline.com. Team 1 choose feather dusters and Team 2 & 3 choose hula hoops.

After choosing those products, we had to show 3 creative ways to use the product while keeping it funny during our commercial. No problem!
It was great coming up with ideas and working as a team. Everyone’s imagination really came through. Frank choose this fun exercise because thinking on our feet is something we do everyday here and this was just another challenge.

Team 2 were the winner! Now if only we could really find some real mermaids to use hula hoops….

All The Time in The World

“I don’t have enough time!”

How many of us has said this? Well on Tuesday morning, Pam explained for us how her biggest obstacle is time management. She had us do an activity where we wrote down 5 things that we wish we had more time for every week. Then she had us write down 5 ways we waste time every week. She explained how it is important to recognize the various things in our life that can contribute to our lack of time in different situations, and how sometimes we say we don’t have enough time, and that in itself can be an obstacle we have to overcome. It is important to decipher between all of our commitments and obligations in order to achieve as much as we can.
Some things to keep in mind when managing your time are:
-PLAN out your day/week/month
-CATEGORIZE your activities by importance (must do, want to do, should do)
-ANALYZE (what are you wasting time on? where can you spend more time?)
-RECOGNIZE obstacles (what is getting in your way? what can you do to change it?)

By even saying you don’t have enough time, puts you that much closer to not achieving something. As busy as we all may get, it is important to stay positive and focused and organize our days, and lives, in a way that will let us achieve and succeed.

Something to keep in mind when things get a little [brought to you by Mark Twain,]
“Apparently there is nothing that cannot happen today”.

Pale Blue Dot

On Monday, obstacles became smaller but in focus at the same time. David is obsessed with learning about the universe. The question of who we are and why we exist are things he thinks about. That’s why he enjoys watching about Carl  Sagan;s video series. Below is clip by Mr. Sagan called Pale Blue Dot.
Whenever David is stressed, he thinks back to this video about how small the earth is in the universe and the problem is insignificant as a result.

Less is More!

This morning, Rob showed us that you don’t have to be materialistic to enjoy life.
“What does it take to make someone happy? A brand new car, an 80” TV, a mansion on the beach? Some people think that material things are all that matter in life, but sometimes that is not the case. The simplest things in life can often make someone happy, and they are often the most meaningful. We should always look to see what can make us happy and whether or not those things will be as meaningful to us in the future. This is often a tough a question for us to answer, but it can be the key to everlasting happiness.”

Before Rob presented, I played a song of Janet Jackson & Luther Vandross’ called Best Things In Life Are Free.
You can tell from the title that the song really goes along with what Rob explained.

Color My Day ______

Yesterday morning Corey had everyone do a short, team building exercise. Everyone was asked to write down 7 colors, one for each day of the week that they associate that color with.   He asked people to share and see how many people agreed or disagreed with each other. People had very different reasons for why they associated one color with one specific day.

For Tuesday, Sasha and Trisha picked Bright Green.
Sasha’s reason was it’s a nice day and she feels smart on that day. (FYI: She is always smart)
Trisha’s reason was it reminds her of the bridesmaids’ dresses for her brother’s upcoming wedding. Tuesday is the only day for her to do wedding preparations.

For Saturday, Sal & Joe picked Yellow.
It is the day S
al usually wakes up with the sun, not before.
For Joe, it is just a free, happy day.

This exercise showed how important empathy is in a social setting and especially a work place. Every individual thinks differently and no one is necessarily wrong or right. This understanding not only helps people get along in the office but it can be applied to sales and customer service as well. Understanding the problem or objection from the customer’s point of view is very important and will aid us in solving that problem or assuring the customer and fighting off that objection.

Interesting fact: In Thai tradition, there are colors assigned to the god of the day.

November Spotlight: Stephanie Paeprer – SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

We can all acknowledge that social media is an integrated part of our lives today. At the office, yes, there is always skepticism on the “productivity” related to being on Facebook, Twitter, and the like. Stephanie, however, took that notion and turned it around 180 degrees.

Stephanie Paeprer loves social media. She’s said it in her initial interview, and she has said it since. What Stephanie, did, however, was seek a creative way to integrate her passion with the needs of the company. Lawline.com has a great culture, however, there wasn’t yet a Twitter account for it. Within her first few days in the company, Stephanie created an account on Twitter for LawlineCulture and raised a significant following while still meeting all her daily goals in her role.

Her passion expanded to her creating a social networking aspect to the Lawline faculty awards (search #facultyevent2011) and added a component that took the Lawline.com culture into the event. Stephanie’s ability to integrate her passion with where Lawline.com is going and what its needs are, and being able to identify this and take action, is truly unique… plus we all love seeing the next Tweet!

That’s How the Story Goes…

During yesterday’s morning meeting, Sasha had everyone played the story game, an activity meant to wake everyone up with a few laughs and get their creative juices flowing so that everyone would be ready to seek creative solutions and find a better way throughout their day. To start, we broke up into four groups of five, and on a sheet of paper each person wrote down a sentence on their piece of paper every thirty seconds. When Sasha called “time,” everyone would pass their piece of paper to the person on their left and that person would write a new sentence. This would happen five times so that a short story was written .

The more abstract goal of this activity was to show how team members can play off of each other’s thoughts and ideas, and turn tiny inklings of ideas into something new and interesting. In one situation, a team’s story took a fairly predictable path but in other story, it took crazy twists and turns and became something totally different and unique. Always remember that a little seedling of an idea can go a long way when when its manipulated and altered through collaboration and teamwork.

Here are a few stories some wrote:

This pen is so cool.
It makes me tickle inside.
Elmo tickles inside.
Elmo is an amazing person once you get to know him.
I only wish he would be my best friend.

Christmas is my favorite day of the year.
Because when I was young my mother would make macaroons!
They were amazing.
I hope we have a white Christmas.
but I was a bad kid so no cookies for me.

The power of postive thinking will rule the world.
But in order to rule the world we must unite!
or we can just get rid of everyone else.
Eitherway we are not stopping until we win.
I love basketball.

When life gives you lemons…

For today’s morning presentation, Mike gave us anxiety-causing situations to deal with.

He played a quick game with everyone regarding the core values. We were split up into 2 groups. Everyone was given a situation and had to work with their team to elaborate on the situation to say how it could potentially be negative. Then, each team will use one of the core values to turn the situation in the positive.

We had  30 seconds to come up with the potentially negative situation and how the core value would provide a solution.
Situations:
Example: Stuck on the train
potentially negative: You’re cramped up with a bunch of people and it’s extremely uncomfortable.
Core value: Actively learning. You use the opportunity to make a little small talk with the professional you’re squished against, and learn they’re an attorney who’s CLE deadline is in 6 days and they haven’t completed it.

  1. Traveling home for the holidays.
  2. You can’t find your wallet.
  3. You hear that a friend has said something mean about you.
  4. You’re sick and have to miss an important appointment.
  5. You’re moving into a new apartment.

There were a lot of great solutions such as finding another faster route during traffic and having friends help you move when you don’t have movers.
The point of this was to highlight how any situation can be turned into a positive. Like it says in The Success Principles book, how we react to situations determines if they are good or bad. Our core values can be used in any potentially negative situation to turn it into a positive.

When you get lemons, you should not only make lemonades but also soft drinks, marinades, Pine-Sol, etc. Have fun while doing it!

Helping the Invisible Children

Alexa shared an inspiration story this Tuesday morning about helping others.

Alexa: “Here is a video I chose to share for the morning presentations. I think Natalie Warne’s story is inspiring to people of all ages. It is never too late or too early to make a difference and start a movement. You just have to be passionate about your cause and know that results don’t happen over night. I also like the video because she mentions the importance of team work. Though not everyone may be recognized at the national level that she was, it took an entire team of people that were equally as dedicated and passionate as she.

This video especially meant a lot to me because I was very aware of the organization Invisible Children. I was about 20 years old when I first saw it and the three founders of it were touring from school to school showing the video and educating people. I always regretted not joining an organization like this when I was still in college. Watching the TED video made me realize it is never too late to make a positive contribution and join an organization that you strongly believe in.”

Here is the link to the TED video

Taking Imagination Seriously

This Tuesday Morning, I presented a video on Janet Echelman.

What is very inspiring about this video is the multiple use of our core values we believe here at Lawline.com. It shows her displaying creative solutions, then she is actively learning as well as driven to be better . With patience and research, she mastered a new form of art that she has never done before.
Her journey through her career reminded me of Lawline.com’s own journey. Whenever we are presented with new situations, we meet it head on ready to solve it. Even if we never did a certain skill before, we learn it and come back better & smarter than before as a team.

One Man’s Trash is Another Man’s Treasure

Today in our AM Huddle, one message from Corey’s presentation was similar to an old saying: “A poor man does not learn from his mistakes. A good man does learn from his mistakes. A wise man learns from the mistakes of others.”

Below is a video by Ian Ritchie, where he talks about the evolution of the internet and how he missed out on the chance to team up with Tim Berners Lee to develop the World Wide Web. The whole message is essentially on making sure to give things a chance and think outside the box, because you never know when a big opportunity might come your way. Dismissing someone as crazy and dismissing their ideas is only going to limit your success. Sometimes you have to be believe in someone else before you can believe in yourself. Take a leap of faith.

October Spotlight: Gamal – SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

In the AM Huddle, there was a recent presentation featured Arnold Schwarzeneggar. In the video, Arnold gave across one message:

In life, there is no maybe. You have to want to achieve, and you have to take action.

With any motivation clip, it hit homes with others, and some, not so much. Certainly, Gamal took this message home and has acted upon his wants to create unique solutions. He has actively expanded his role, on his own, in a number of ways.

First, Gamal volunteered  to take on weekend and off-hours customer service. He also began to propose marketing initiatives and create outlines of potential benefits for the company outside of his current role. This was in addition to greater initiatives in sales, in which put together nightly recaps and frequent meeting topics. None of this was asked, but because there was a real need laying present in the organization, Gamal has not only begun to define it, he has actively stood up and sough a solution: his own actions.

You Say Tomato…

In today’s huddle, Robert pointed out there are many options to a situation.

The best way to think about a solution to a problem is not only to think about the logical solutions but to think of the uncharacteristic ways that the problem can be solved.  There are many different ways to think about everything that we are surrounded by and there is no set way that is right and one that is wrong.  The best way to look at the world is to look at different perspectives and to see what other viewpoints that you are missing out on.

Thinking outside the (elevator) box

For Fun Friday, Anna showed us how to literally think outside an elevator box.

We used the exercise of the “Pokey Elevators” as an entry into discussing better ways to think of Creative Solutions. From the Elevators Case Study, we learned that sometimes problems are not what they appear to be at first thought, and that sometimes coming up with an answer to a problem requires us to get to the deeper issues. What you need to do is think about the problems, not just the solutions, in a novel and creative way. We saw that although people might be complaining about how slow elevators are, in reality the problem is that they are just bored while they wait, a completely different problem, that has a much easier solution. We finished with some tips on Creative Thinking- including turning a problem “upside down”, “working backwards” from a goal, “inviting randomness” into your thought process and of course, taking a nice, long, piping hot shower.

The Spinach Stories

This Thursday, Frank made us think about performing above and beyond. The Spinach Story comes from sales consultant and speaker, Jack Daly. It is his way of telling groups he speaks to about going above and beyond the normal customer service and care that is expected.

In our morning meeting today employees viewed the video and broke up into groups of 4. Each group discussed for ten minutes ways in which they or their departments have come up with spinach stories over the last few months.

We came back and shared all of our experiences and ideas together, prompting many employees and managers to be surprised by how many great Spinach Stories we had to share. It is always great to take a few minutes out, hear from your employees how they have gone above and beyond, and then hear new ideas they can put into action today!

September Spotlight: Chris – SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

“Customer Service Guru”

When Christopher had to have business cards ordered, that is exactly the title he got and with good reason. Christopher gives 200% to help the customers of Lawline every day. He does not just solve the immediate problem but makes sure to follow-up with the customer to see if things are running smoothly and if they need anything else.  That is dedication.

There was a customer who called that Ann responded to. The customer promptly said “My name is Mr. X.  Chris knows.  Have him email me”. As Ann called Chris and only said Mr. X’s name, Chris already knew what he had to do and in fact already had taken care of it. Only gurus can achieve that level of relationship with customers.

With help from Trisha, Chris implemented a new chat feature on Lawline’s website. After research, the new chat system works much better than the previous one and was more cost efficient. Chris also started taking the reins for a bug tracking system. He wants to help the Development department since he knows it will help save time and ultimately provide a better customer experience. No one asked him to do so; he took it upon himself.  With his new systems and weekly meetings, those pesky bugs will surely have no hiding space left!

It is great to know we have a guru to help the wonderful customers of Lawline.

The Success Princples: How to Get From Where You are to Where You Want to Be

successprinciplesgif2

In yesterday’s Huddle I was happy to hand out a copy of “The Success Princples: How to Get From Where You are to Where You Want to Be” to everyone in the company.  I first listened to the principles on Audible and was so motivated by them I purchased the book on the Kindle.  However, this is the type of book that its good to have a hard copy so you can write in the margins and keep around your apartment.

During the meeting I presented two examples from the book to give a taste of what is inside.

  1. It is easier to be 100% committed to something than 99%. — There was a 75 year old man who ran 8 miles a day. Only on a full moon he would eat ice cream. His birthday fell on a new moon and his family dressed as a full moon to try to convince him to eat the ice cream cake. He politely declined and said if he cheats a little now it will be that much easier to cheat again.
  2. It is important to always keep your agreements and commitments. If you do you will be relied on more by others as well as have a stronger belief in yourself.  Particularly in a company setting this is very important to other members of your team.  Four ways to keep your agreements are 1) Make less commitments, 2) Say no more, 3) Write down every commitment you make, 4) Renegotiate commitments you cant keep.

I am looking forward to getting everyone’s feedback as they navigate the many principles in the book.  Just a hint the first 5 are some of the most important so you will get hooked early.

August Core Values- Sean Barr – SEEKING CREATIVE SOLUTIONS

“Before I evaluate today, huge CONGRATULATIONS to Sean for coming up big with his first sale as a Lawline employee as well as the first sale in the VA Market.  Keep up the hard work Sean! “

-Sales Recap, August 10.

Though still new to the team, Sean has shown a great ability to be quick on his feet, stay agile, and find creative ways to get the job done.

Sean has overcome a few obstacles – learning the sales routine and product, developing his pitch, and dealing with a multitude of technical glitches that seemed to magnate to his accounts early on. Regardless, Sean continued to seek ways to get the job done.

For example, Sean kept his appointments in-line despite unexplained malfunctions  with his Google calendar. With thousands of leads to keep track of, this is a key tool for organization. He also has kept his call-volume high throughout his CRM click-through malfunctions, hitting his goal daily. As a result, sales have picked up quick for Sean the past few weeks as he has built his pipeline in our upcoming markets.

Though still new to the CLE selling game, Sean has quickly shown he has the ability to come up with creative ways to reach his goals. Great things await Sean as he continues to prove his ability to think creatively and optimistically.

Core Values Spotlight: Frank is Seeking Creative Solutions

Frank2

Seeking creative solutions is a core value distinguished from finding a better way. Both require creativity as well as analytic thought, but an analogy shows the difference. Think of the plastic rings that bind together a 6 pack. A creative solution would be to cut the rings to protect ocean life, while finding a better way would be to look for a way to not dump the rings in the ocean altogether. Seeking creative solutions means taking action quickly, identifying the problem, determining the best solution, and then implementing it all at once.

Frank Furbacher Jr. routinely seeks creative solutions, leaping into action when there is a problem, calm and calculated, not stopping until a solution is found. This has been exemplified over the past few weeks as our two Lawline offices are combining into one. Frank has gone above and beyond to coordinate moving desks, finding a new Office Ambassador to greet guests, and pitching in anywhere necessary not just to do what needs to be done, but also making sure to use the best means possible to complete the task.

Frank’s creativity crosses into all aspects of Lawline, and includes brainstorming new sales techniques and using Google docs to effectively organize and utilize shared data between Lawline employees. Also, through his implementation of the culture blog and career center, he has recruited a new crop of Lawline applicants who are attracted to the core values and mission to promote education in a creative environment.

His continued creative initiatives building a strong culture and work environment brings top talent through Lawline’s doors and makes Lawline a better place to work.

John McEnroe now has our Core Values Card

John McEnroe

Last night I attended a Ping Pong event held by Entrepreneurs Organization, which I have been a member for the past two years.  On my way home some guy saw my paddles and started asking a bunch of questions.  It turns out it was John McEnroe and he is playing in ping pong tournament next week at Spin. I gave him one of the paddles as he said he would use it the tournament.

Of course I used it as an opportunity to spread the word about our Core Values.  I gave him a card and took him through them. I took a photo with him, while he had the card the wrong way and its hardly in the photo, I felt good that I was able to keep spreading the word.

Always carry the core values card on you as you never know who you will meet.

Book Review: Inside the Success of 100 Great Businesses

Today I’ll be reviewing “Inside the Success of 100 Great Businesses” by Emily Ross and Angus Holland.  I asked Dave for a recommendation awhile ago and he suggested this entertaining book – thanks!

This book contains 100 short stories of how businesses in various industries were created, the challenges they faced, and the unique paths they took to achieve tremendous success. What I liked most about the narratives is that they focused on the people who created the businesses – their childhoods, backgrounds, and values.  It was interesting to learn about how these leaders were able to overcome adversity and direct their companies in the right direction.

Revolutionaries – IKEA
The sections of this book are divided into various “categories” of successful companies. One such category, the “revolutionaries,” includes companies that transformed their respective industries by undertaking bold new endeavors.  IKEA is a revolutionary company that is mentioned is the book.  I’m sure most of you have heard of IKEA and even bought some furniture from one of its stores.  For those of you who don’t know, IKEA is a company that provides affordable and fashionable furniture to the masses on a worldwide scale.  It was founded by Swedish entrepreneur Ingvar Kamprad in 1943 and is now the largest furniture retailer in the world.

Mr. Kamprad is credited for revolutionizing the furniture industry as he was able to make furniture, considered luxury goods at the time, accessible to the general public.  He accomplished this by aggressively undercutting his competitors and implementing innovative strategies to reduce production costs.  Viewed as a threat by other Swedish furniture companies, IKEA was eventually boycotted by The Swedish National Association of Furniture Dealers (at the time the biggest furniture association in Sweden).  Mr. Kamprad swiftly adapted to this roadblock that stood in the way of his company’s continued growth – he began producing furniture in neighboring Poland (across the Baltic Sea and to the south of Sweden) and hiring in-house furniture designers.  To save on storage and shipping costs, Mr. Kamprad came up with the ingenious idea to flat-pack the furniture in boxes (e.g., having the legs of a table detached) and sell them this way to customers.  Flat-packing also made it extremely easy for customers to transport furniture and assemble it in their homes.

Have you ever purchased furniture from IKEA?  If you look at the instruction manual, you will notice that there are only pictures and no words – this is such a simple yet powerful concept that efficiently creates a universal set of instructions. The pictures are clear and the assembly is minimal so that even a chimpanzee can put together IKEA furniture!*

Throughout the evolution of his company, Mr. Kamprad always emphasized the importance of having a proactive approach to meeting customer needs.  For example, when he noticed that customers were leaving the store during lunch hours, Mr. Kamprad installed cafeterias serving delicious and affordable food.  He also introduced child care services that made it comfortable for young families to remain in IKEA stores for extended periods of time.

Mr. Kamprad set up nine commandments that his employees are required to follow – these commandments center on the values of enthusiasm, humility, and responsibility.  These values define him as a person and so he is able to set a great example for employees to follow.  He also discourages extravagance and waste – although he’s a billionaire, he drives a beat-up Volvo, flies economy class, and rides public transportation whenever possible.

*This is not intended to demean the intelligence of (1) chimpanzees or (2) people who are unable to assemble IKEA furniture properly.

Is Lawline a “Revolutionary” Company?
The reason why I talked about IKEA at length is because I think Lawline shares many of its principles.  Lawline is a company that:

  • Is agile so that it can quickly adapt to technology and the needs of its customers;
  • Is constantly finding ways to become more effective in reaching goals and more efficient in performing tasks;
  • Is focused on providing stellar service to customers and faculty members; and
  • Embraces its core values so that they are the guiding principles from which decisions are made and actions are taken.

As Lawline strives to “become the universal standard for continuing education,” it begs the question as to what this phrase means – I interpret it to signify our endeavor to become the unequivocal leader of the continuing education industry that relentlessly sets and raises the bar for quality and service.

A company becoming the “universal standard” of an industry is not an easy accomplishment that occurs overnight or through the efforts of a handful of individuals – It can only be achieved through the collaborative effort of every employee to reach a common objective (the big picture), hard work, and a fierce determination to find a better way of doing every single task.  Each person is in the best position to ascertain the improvements can be made in their respective roles and should take responsibility in ensuring that such improvements come to fruition.

Will Lawline end up in mediocrity or rise up to the challenge and become the undisputed leader in continuing education? Each one of us is empowered to help steer our company down the path to success – cheers to the future of Lawline!

How to Build a Successful Company Culture

100_0281

Some people hate their job, but here at Lawline we are lucky to have people who are intensely passionate about building a strong cohesive culture and making this a great place to work. A great company culture is not something that just “happens,” it is designed. And Lawline CEO David Schnurman has put a lot of thought into designing a strong company culture based on a collaborative fun environment full of people who like to be challenged, and has been recognized for his ideas most recently by the Fox Small Business Center.

In his recent article on the Fox Small Business Center, David writes about the difficult process of creating a collaborative and challenging environment. He gives examples of things he has done to create this kind of environment that we see on a daily basis here at Lawline.

The result? David said and I think we would all echo that “We are fortunate to now have successfully achieved a fun atmosphere where our employees come early, act professional, exude positive energy, and feel committed to the success of the company, while always pushing each other to find a better way to accomplish our goals.”

Core Values are Soaring!

Since I received my Core Values card I have been instilling them on my children. All of our Lawline.com values apply to the school and social situations and lately I’ve even heard one of there friends mention our Core Values.

So I brought my kids to the Meadowlands Fair this weekend, before we went I mentioned to them about Kyles post about where his card has been and that I wanted to take a picture of the card while we were there. They had the great idea of showing it on top of the ferris wheel. So here is our core Value cards 285 feet in the air.

Taken with android so I apologize for the quality.

3 Tips to Keep Your Business Growing

253568_209632035739493_149645448404819_481702_8300342_n

Two words, fun and discipline. Lawline CEO David Schnurman details the steps he has taken to create the phenomenal culture here at Lawline in a recent post on the Young Entrepreneurs Council website. The article focuses on the struggle many companies deal with when trying to create a disciplined team. “There are two key aspects to building a successful company culture. The first is creating a fun and relaxed atmosphere where your employees love coming to work each day. The second is creating an environment where your employees collaborate with each other, are challenged to work hard and improve, and are accountable to themselves and the team on a daily basis.” Dave goes on to say that the more difficult of the two is the later, creating daily accountability and discipline within each employee and among the group.

Using a variety of measures, however, David has been able to expand Lawline by making it a great place to work where people come in early excited about new ideas. He identifies 3 keys to success for creating a great company culture, including creating a culture of discipline, maintaining a high proportion on Energy in vs. Energy out, and giving employees a vested interest in the company. See the full article below to get the scoop on how Lawline keeps growing!

Creative Solutions – Christie LaBarca

Business Intelligence is the key to implementing effective marketing and sales decisions. To make the best use of information, though, requires a dynamic person to know what data is most important, how to obtain it, and how to use it effectively. This is a rare ability. What is even more unique is the person that not only knows how to create intelligent information, but also communicates with customers on a daily basis. Christie LaBarca is that individual.

Christie possesses both creativity and strong interpersonal and social skills.  She started at Lawline.com during a period when only a limited number of products were sold, despite customers with extremely varying demands across 41 states.  Through her ingenuity, she recognized that the time of the year, the state, the customer history, and even the customer behavior dictated buyer behavior.

Christie then took the initiative to outline a custom CRM in which Lawline.com employees would be able to differentiate all customers based on multiple criteria. Taking it to the next level, she used the system to divide up every customer into a specific purchase segment, drafted predictions, and proceeded (with help) to call each and every one.

From here, not only was a new revenue source created, but there was a substantially large increase in customer satisfaction. Christie’s creativity led to a personalized offer for each customer, and this has created an innovative and original customer retention program unseen before her vision.
