Presents, Dinner, and Awards – Oh My!

On 12-12-12, FurtherEd had their Secret Santa exchange, Holiday Party and 2012 FurtherEd Core Values of the Year Awards.

While in the office, everyone dropped off their presents randomly in the conference room. Afterwards, we all had to guess who was our Santa which was a tough one.
After work we headed to Bocca, Stephanie’s favorite restaurant, and had the most wonderful time there.  Dinner couldn’t have been more delicious.

Our Grand Hanukkah Party

Last Monday, we had a Hanukkah party in the office. Everyone was invited to learn about the history of Chanukah in a most interesting and funny way. Rabbi Nisi was kind enough to share the experience to all!

There were latkas, sufganiyot, fruits, and even sushi (kosher of course). All I can say is it was most delicious!

Making Winter Wishes Come True

With the holidays upon us, we tend to remember the happy memories we had as a kid when opening the gifts. However, not every child has the opportunity to experience that.

New York Cares runs a program called Winter Wishes in which kids write letters wishing for gifts. I explained to everyone that anyone participating would be a Secret Santa and expect nothing in return but that feeling that they made someone’s Christmas brighter. After getting a majority of the office signed up, we all received our letters and went on a mission to be the best Santas we could. Some requests were pricey such as a Nintendo 3DS, but people here still fulfilled those wishes. All of our gifts have been mailed out and we feel joy throughout the office.

There were a lot of positive feedback.

  • Kenny: “I really enjoyed it. I liked how it gave the gift giver some leeway but also made sure the child got something meaningful.
  • Meredith : “I saved my kid’s letter, I loved it so much. I think I liked it so much because I saw myself in the kid….like when I was her age I wanted to play with the “boy” toys too…I played with Legos and trucks with my brother all the time.

Many Zombies, Four Groups, One Space Shuttle

Melissa: For my morning presentation, I wanted to plan an activity that would get everyone’s minds and bodies energized for the day. We broke up into 4 teams, the activity was as follows:

The zombie apocalypse has begun, rendering the world inhabitable for humans. Most have fled to a space community, but we here at Lawline have stayed behind for as long as possible to keep working! There is one last shuttle leaving today, and there is only room for one group.

Their Mission:
Each group has 5 minutes to find 3 items in the office that will be most useful for this new space community. The group who come up with the best items will gain access onto the shuttle!

One group brought hand sanitizers, iPad, and matches. The winning group, Team 3, bought a first aid kit, a rubber band ball and a statue of an eagle! The eagle as a keepsake for the US, the ball is a weapon, and who doesn’t need a first aid kit.

The activity’s purpose was to get everyone energized for the day by working as teams towards a common goal. I also wanted everyone to get together and think creatively- each group came up with really great ideas!

An Intro to Lucid Dreaming

Ever since I can remember, dreams have always been a big part of my life. I’ve kept dream journals on and off since I was a kid, and going back and reading them is one of my favorite pastimes. One variant of dreaming that has always fascinated me is lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is the act of becoming conscious of the fact you are dreaming, and thus are able to control your dreams (to varying extents).

Whenever I explain my interest in lucid dreaming to someone new, they tend to look at me as if I’m talking about some sort of mystical, magical nonsense. But there is researched, proven science behind lucid dreaming. It is a very real occurrence, and it’s even been used for medical purposes, most commonly as a cure for chronic nightmares. And the best part about lucid dreaming is that if you’re dedicated (and willing to possibly lose some sleep), you can teach yourself to do it.

There are a variety of methods you can use to teach yourself to lucid dream. I’ve recently taken Lawline’s Actively Learning Core Value into practice and am starting to experiment with several of these methods. Here’s a breakdown of two of the most common approaches, in case you’re interested in starting to explore your own personal dream world:

Dream-Initiated Lucid Dreaming
Dream-initiated lucid dreaming takes conscious effort and dedication during your day-to-day life. The idea behind dream-initiated lucidity is to become conscious of your wakeful state throughout the day and tie it to some sort of stimuli that you will recognize in your dreams. (Think the totems in Inception, but a lot simpler.) For example, the method I’m using is drawing an ‘A’ on the palm of my hand. This A stands for ‘awake’, and every time I see the A, I become conscious of the fact I’m awake. Then I perform something called a wake-test (or a reality check), such as looking in a mirror to see if my reflection is normal. If my reflection is normal, I know that I am most likely awake. However, if my reflection were to appear distorted, or if it was missing completely (common occurrences in dreams), I would become aware of the fact that I’m dreaming and gain consciousness in my dream. I would then, theoretically, be able to control some aspects of my dream. If you get in the habit of performing these wake-tests during your daily life, you are more likely to perform them in your dreams and become lucid.

Wake-Initiated Lucid Dreaming
Wake-initiated lucid dreaming occurs when the dreamer goes directly into REM sleep (when lucid dreams take place) from a waking state without breaking self-awareness. This is a more difficult avenue into lucid dreaming, but with the help of a website called Square Eater, it’s easier than ever to achieve lucidity from a waking state. Square Eater provides a pairing of audio and visual stimuli that replicate the brain waves that occur during REM sleep. This helps the brain reach those wavelengths more rapidly, thus initiating REM sleep closer to the gap between sleep and wakefulness and allowing dreaming to happen while the person is closer to consciousness. This makes it much easier to become aware of when you’re dreaming.

There are plenty of other methods that can help one learn to lucid dream. One very important step in learning to lucid dream is to keep a dream journal. Keeping a dream journal will help to recognize recurring events, objects, or symbols in your dreams. Once you becoming conscious of the recurring themes in your dreams, you are more likely to notice them in your dreams and realize that you are dreaming, which induces lucidity.

The ability to lucid dream doesn’t come overnight. But if you are dedicated, it’s very achievable. Experiment with it! The sooner you start, the sooner you will be experiencing your dreams like never before.

Progress From Employees’ Standpoint

As a company, we are ever changing…striving for the next step. Hence the creation of FurtherEd and TeachEm! Stale and old are unknown within our walls. With all the new changes, I asked a few employees of their opinion.

  1. What is TeachEm to you?
  2. What do you think about the FurtherEd and future of the company from an employee standpoint?

FRANK

  • I see it as a useful tool for leaders in business, education, and groups to share with members of their team an easier way to digest video content from YouTube.  TeachEm makes it simple to share not only the video, but the note cards in order to cut down videos and the comprehension of the content.
  • FurtherEd is our biggest strength.  It allows everyone in the company the flexibility to give ideas not just on law or accounting education, but education as a whole.  We now have a clearer direction in which our company will follow as well as a larger canvas to paint on using our creativeness.

JULIE

  • I think it is an opportunity to re-invent teaching and apply it to today’s world.  I have friends who are currently teachers, all at different grade levels, and when I speak to them about today’s education and learning process- it is really different than from what I remember school being like as a child.  It is inevitable that we are moving into a completely technological society and children now-a-days are using things that we never would have dreamed of when we were children, same as our parents when they were children.  I think that TeachEm is bridging the gap of the past and future learning and really allowing people to explore all avenues of education.  There really is no limit with TeachEm and it is so easy to use that this can be the next Google.  I say this because people use Google a lot of the time to look up information they don’t already know.  So why not look this up in TeachEm?  You can not only find the answer to that specific question, but maybe other questions you may not have thought of related to that topic.
  • I think that FurtherEd is really taking learning to the next level by allowing limitless possibilities of learning to happen wherever and whenever.  FurtherEd will literally be that place that you can go to to learn about ANYTHING and I love the fact that in this case, the sky really is the limit!

SIGALLE

  • Teachem is the opportunity for individuals, like you and me, to show how we think education should be structured and how we believe learning can be facilitated. It gives the every day person a voice in educational reform.
  •  I believe that this is a wonderful feeling from an Employee standpoint!  We are part of a virtually endless growing opportunity for the company as a whole as the possibility for further verticals is endless! As an employee this is exciting and inspiring and always keeps the momentum going!

How Is Lawline Like A Blackhole?

Kenneth: I spoke about my experience reading “A Brief History of Time” by Stephen Hawking and how a few of the underlying of principles of quantum mechanics and relativism actually apply to education, learning and the Lawline way. Specifically, I enjoyed how so many of the theories or principles that initially seem either counter intuitive or simply counter to how daily life works actually allow for much more flexibility once they are better understood. One example comes from the second law of thermodynamics, the principle that all matter favors and is moving towards a more disordered state. The second law of thermodynamics is the basis for much of the argumentation in the book surrounding the theory that the universe is expanding and the reasons black holes behave as experimental physicists think they do.

 

 

Yet, it would seem that daily working life at Lawline, on face, is about moving towards greater order: a more organized website, more streamlined hiring processes, Google Docs to organize data, etcetera . Yet, in creating all of these ordered structures, an incredible amount of energy is expended to allow the brains of those involved to make these decisions, not to mention energy expended to commute to work to engage in these activities. In fact, the energy expended in various forms by Lawliners to reach these various levels of order definitely outweighs any magnitude of order achieved, and with greater energy emitted comes greater disorder (a hotter object is by definition, more disordered, as it becomes hotter because molecules within it are moving around more quickly and running into other molecules more frequently). So while we may be making Lawline more organized, it comes at the expense of energy expended and disorder created elsewhere (which is part of the reason we’re in constant need of building temperature adjustment).

 

I also appreciated and commented in my presentation on Stephen Hawking’s willingness to admit when he had made mistakes, whether about blackholes being invisible by definition (there are some unique exceptions where they may be visible) or simply in his admission that, due to the uncertainty principle, he will never be fully correct or accurate in any of his proposals, but simply nearing closer to an absolute. He’s considered one of the foremost experts on blackholes, and yet he would not have reached this point without proposing hypothesis that ultimately proved to be contradicted; through stumbling and learning why he had been wrong, he has reached conclusions that appear to be closer to the physical truth. Extrapolating this, any workplace, Lawline or otherwise, would seem to be able to perform better, and reach greater outcomes more frequently, the more open it is to allowing workers to experiment and innovate, whether with re-organizing the current systems or being explicitly given a certain period of time each day or week to imagine the current workplace without any of its structural constraints, simply as an ideal (in our case, ASTED) and a mission, and then throw ideas against the wall that would legitimately be applied, and not just acknowledged as innovative, in the current work environment.

Mind-Blowing Videos

Joe: I’ve always loved music videos, especially when they are a bit inspired. Today was a tribute to seeking creative solutions, so I selected a handful of music videos that were presented with a unique problem that they had to solve in an out-of-the-box way. Whether it was telling a story from a new perspective, paying tribute to another artists, or just remaining true to your original concept while staying in budget, each video was able to figure out a brilliant solution.

Observing the Reserve Gold

Because we love actively learning, there was a trip to the NY Federal Reserve Bank yesterday for another group of Lawliners. Kamal, Rob, Ryan, Sal, & Todd took a guided tour to the bank of gold.

They all learned that there is more than $365 billion in gold being held in lower Manhattan and Rob observed that there must be at least 3 people in order to enter the gold lockers. The experience of going several stories underneath the subway tracks and entering an airlock vault to actually see a couple of bricks was pretty awesome – you can quote Sal on that.

Ryan thought the tour was super informative and suggest that more people should definitely take the guided tour, if only for the first 20 minutes where the guide takes the time to dispel every myth and misconception about the Federal Reserve.

Of course stacks upon stacks of gold bricks is super impressive to look (not touch) upon.  Unfortunately Rob wasn’t given a souvenir.

KAMAL: August’s Winner of the “Actively Learning”

Kamal has been Actively Learning the Customer Support system, including Zendesk at a record pace!

If you look at the history of Lawline.com’s Off Hours Customer Support you will learn about a bunch of dedicated employees who worked crazy hours to make sure every customer got the appropriate attention in a timely fashion.

In the summer of 2012 it finally came time to hire someone who was dedicated to the “Off Hours” time slot of 2pm-10pm as the “second shift” of support.

Kamal has done an amazing job with the new off hours position and has mastered the customer support role in record time!  He has helped free up other support rep’s time and has made their mornings completely different.

When our ticket system, Zendesk, is opened in the morning it is an amazing feeling to know everyone who had questions the night before has been satisfied!

Dave & I both were battling colds but still manage to come out to help out the Bed-Stuy Community in Brooklyn. The weather was nice and cool. How Much Is Too Much Technology?

With 2012 coming to a close, progression in technology is still full steam ahead! With the advent of the IPhone 5, I thought to show the video produced by Google for their launch of Google Glasses. This new spin on smart technology has now transformed smart phones to smart “glasses”. Google created a line of glasses that connects the user with what they see to features that help simplify everyday life. Features like GPS, transportation updates, schedules, as well as the occasional phone call to a friend. But how simple is too simple?

After the Lawline team watched the video, I asked the question “is this too much reliance on technology?” Are we allowing technology to make us so dependent on it that we lessen our problem solving skills? Or is technology sparking a more fierce connection between one’s environment and our gadgets and gizmos aplenty? The choice is up to you! Lawliners expressed both sides of this technological coin. With 2013 right around the corner (hopefully the Mayans were wrong), we can ask, “what’s next?” Google Contacts? We shall see- pun intended.

Discovering Jewish History

Yesterday, a group of Lawliners signed up for one of our fun activities here: trip to the Museum of Jewish Heritage. Skip Yelp and read their personal reviews of the museum.

Alex: Continuing the tradition of always learning, Wednesday’s trip to the Museum of Jewish Heritage was the perfect way to spend a muggy afternoon.  We learned a lot about the history of the American Jewry and greatly enjoyed the trip

Blair: There was a Holocaust portion and that was very intense with videos, pictures, and artifacts of survivors and the murdered. Overall [it was] very informative, interesting and I’m glad I went!

Jeff F: The museum was amazing. Other people visiting were very engaging and willing to volunteer facts about old artifacts, rituals and people.  There were some powerful and somber moments but overall it was a fulfilling learning experience.

Melissa: It was both sobering and uplifting.  The Holocaust exhibit was very sorrowful, and I don’t think any of us walked through it without having an intense emotional reaction.  But the vast majority of other exhibits were beautiful. They really showed how rich in culture Judaism really is because its practitioners come from all around the world.

Meredith: It was great to learn more about Jewish heritage than just what happened during WWII. The museum looked at what Jewish culture is all about, how the Jewish people have come back since the war, and how aspects of Jewish history and culture have permeated throughout American pop culture. It seemed like the focus was going to be all on the Holocaust, but there was actually quite a lot of optimism throughout the exhibits, which was refreshing!

Ryan: The museum provided an in-depth look into the history of the Jewish people that was one you may not find with a cursory glance through history. It was more than just the Holocaust, but an exploration of the past, present, and future of the Jewish culture. I enjoyed the heck out of it. Plus it had a sweet rotunda dedicated solely to the song “Hava Nagila”.

Lawline’s 5-Year Time Capsule!

The Next Best Thing Since Pandora's Box

Since last Friday morning, Brandon has the office setting up a time capsule that will be opened in 5 years. Since the company is going through some amazing growth right now, he thought it would be an exciting idea to have everyone share their vision of where the company would be in 5 years. On a piece of paper we wrote:

  3. Where We See The Company In 5 Years
  4. Anything We Wanted To Share With Our Future Self/Generation

In addition, there are items we put in the time capsule such business cards, core value cards, and other items that relate to our job and our time here at Lawline.The time capsule will be locked for good on this Friday, 10/6/2012!

Racing & Baking for the Kids

This past Saturday, a group of Lawliners participated in the 2012 Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC RBC Race for the Kids. It was a beautiful 2.5 mile race through Riverside Park. Afterwards, Nickelodeon hosted a Day of Play for the kids. Michele got to experience every kid’s dream and got slimmed.

However the real work came beforehand from donations raised from family, friends, bake sale, and penny wars.

In the penny wars, we had the office split into two teams and compete to raise pennies for their own team while helping the opposite team lose by giving quarters, dollars, and nickels. In the end, Team 1 “won” and will be getting a frozen yogurt party.  However the real winners are the kids.

For Lawline’s 1st bake sale, we sold Confetti Sugar Cookies, Pumpkin Pies, Red Velvet Cupcakes, and Chocolate Chip Banana Walnut Muffins (say that 5 times fast!). The yummy treats were baked by Casey, Trisha, myself, and Symphonie(not pictured). Stephanie not only provided refreshments but was the salesperson. The bake sale was more successful than predicted due to everyone’s awesome teamwork. Dave S., Lawline’s president, matched the bake sale profits from his own pockets.

Lawline.com donated itself $1,525.00 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of NYC! With the collective effort, we raised $3,480.22. We’re so proud to give to such a good cause and have so much fun while doing it!

Never Stop At The Top

Rob: Richard St. John has spoken at a few of the TED seminars and this by far has been my favorite one. He gives real life examples of how success is a continuous journey and that success never takes a break. He stated that the main difference between the people that are successful and the people that are not is that the people who are successful continue to improve and find new ways of achieving their success. The people who are not successful either do not try hard enough or achieve success at one point in time and then slack off and fall back. This video can be related to all people in their daily lives and gives a good explanation of how to become successful.

Money Doesn’t Work The Way You Think.

Ryan: Motivation is a tricky subject for many people, especially for employers and employees. Traditional thinking in a business setting dictates that higher pay leads to higher quality work, and that this type of reward incentive is universal. However, in anyplace with any modicum of innovation and creativity, this line of thinking is erroneous.

For any task that requires even rudimentary critical thinking skills, motivation is dictated more by the often internalized feelings and needs of employees. The people with the best creative output tend to be those who are self-directed, those who are allowed to achieve mastery, and those who feel that their work is not only improving themselves and their organization, but improving life for people around the world.

The Joy of (Free) Learning

Our newest intern, Alex, put one of Lawline’s courses to the true test.  As the most recent addition to the Lawline team, this post tells Alex’s first experience with Lawline’s course catalog.

I became acquainted with Lawline a little over two weeks ago when I began the process of applying to an internship position.  As I researched and spent time on the website, it quickly became obvious that this was a great company with a strong idea, strong sense of self, and strong company culture, all of which I knew I wanted to be a part.

But it wasn’t until I began my internship last week that I truly realized the amazing potential of Lawline.com for the general public, attorneys and non-attorneys alike, because what I didn’t truly grasp until I took my own first course as part of training was the vast potential for education and self-betterment the site offers.

First, a little bit of personal background: I graduated from Columbia University in May with a degree in English.  While I had (and have) a love of learning, reading, and writing, I was unsure of how I would apply my skills and passions in the real world.  At the same time, I was, and still am, involved with the independent production of a documentary chronicling the lives of three transgender women from Mexico seeking political asylum in the United States.  As a result, the majority of my free time recently has been spent researching political asylum, LGBT legislation both in the US and Mexico, ICE and detention policies, and more.  This self-study has been time consuming, informative, and also without much direction.  During the filming of the documentary, the immigration lawyer representing our main subject was giving a bit of background information on immigration and the process of seeking asylum, and I found myself intrigued by one topic in particular, the U Visa—which prevents deportation for immigrants who have been the victims of a crime and who have, in turn, cooperated with law enforcement—but as it did not directly apply to her client or any of our other subjects, she simply touched on it briefly before moving on.

As I browsed through the course catalog on Friday, I came across immigration lawyer Harlan York’s course on the U-Visa and finally learned about the legislation.  Even without a legal background, I came away from his lecture with a surprisingly clear and in-depth understanding of how the U-Visa fits into immigration law in general, about the reasons behind passing the U-Visa and for whom the U-Visa is meant.  And as I finished the course, I came to the realization that if I had used Lawline to guide my documentary research from the beginning, there would have been a direction and organization to my understanding of immigration law (rather than a haphazard amalgamation of Wikipedia articles).  Now that the film is nearing completion and we face questions of distribution, I am beginning to research the more complicated ins-and-outs of filmmaking, and I’m starting with Ethan Bordman’s course “Script to Screen: The Legal Challenges of Creating a Film.”

The ability to take courses for free on Lawline—and to really take them, to watch the course and to download reading material and take and save notes— allows me essentially to create a self-guided curriculum so that I can acquire the knowledge I need, keeping track of any gaps I might be missing, and furthermore to create information packets that I can share with everyone else working on the project.  While filming the documentary in Los Angeles, I was impressed by how driven the women I met were to learn about their rights.  Often with a limited knowledge of the English language, they have educated themselves about the law and how it affects them, have sought representation for themselves, and once they’ve acquired it, for others in their community.  I am struck by how helpful the concise organization of Lawline’s courses would be to non-lawyers who want (and sometimes need) to educate themselves as thoroughly and accurately about the law as possible.  There is far more to these courses than certification—there is a world of knowledge that is trustworthy and up-to-date and organized in a way that makes self-guided study not only feasible, but exciting.

Visual Understanding of the Credit Crisis

Kenneth: Symbols and the visual medium can be extremely helpful when trying to learn, and subsequently retain, information about complex topics or multi-step processes. I hadn’t realized how powerful animation and well-thought out graphics could be as a learning tool until the end of my sophomore year of college, when my economics teacher at the time, Professor Gulati, used The Credit Crisis a 12-minute video put together by Jonathan Jarvis, a UNICEF staff member, to summarize the 2008 housing crisis. He was adamant that online technology was being underutilized by teachers simply because of fear or because colleagues weren’t willing to actually incorporate Internet education fully into their curriculum (and were simply letting videos and YouTube clips stand alone without explanation, which defeats any positive gains in education that might be achieved through the medium).
This video not only made the 2008 housing crisis much easier to understand and analyze, but it also highlighted how important a diversity of learning mediums is when educating a wide variety of students; I had understood the crisis in a mathematical sense, but hadn’t ever been able to conceptualize how the individual elements, the families, the bankers etc. fit into the whole. I was able to grasp these nuances through watching these interactions visually displayed in the Credit Crisis Visualized. If you haven’t watched this video and still have any questions about what happened prior and during 2008 in America to lead to the “bubble” bursting, I highly recommend it as a supplement to reading about the subject. If you consider yourself a financial markets expert, the video should be valuable as a refresher as well as a test of sorts; there are many sections that are oversimplified and, if you are completely abreast of the subject, you should be able to notice these areas and explain the underlying, more complex mechanisms at work.

I chose to play this video for Lawline this morning to illustrate how powerful the online medium can be in education, emphasizing that recent efforts by the trifecta of Sigalle (voice-over), Micah (videographer) and Sal (illustrator) to introduce Lawconomy, our upcoming night event on the economy featuring Ben Stein, and TeachEm, FurtherEd’s soon-to-be-released, customizable classroom and education platform, are quite similar to this video in providing another medium, outside of the typical press release and beta testing, for consumers to learn about these events.

Department Tip of the Week: Human Resources

It’s often said, the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.  While this is true, the parts must be strong as well.  This theory can easily be used in human resources when recruiting future employees for a company.  A company’s success and compatibility is of the utmost importance, but it is the individual employees and how they work together that create that unique, innovative team.

One of the most important things (and our tip of the week) an HR professional should keep in mind is that recruiting A players requires A hiring methods. To ensure as a company that we are hiring A players, there is an effective formula we use that includes; phone screening, top-grading interview, focused interview, references and trial period.

The phone screening focuses on clearing out the B and C players, so that we are only left with A players.  If you have landed an in-person interview, we already under the impression we are dealing with an A player.  To confirm this, we use the top-grading interview process.  During this portion of the interview real life experience, not generalities are key.

In a focused interview we are looking to gain an understanding of the outcomes and competencies of the candidate.  This allows us to see what the candidate is truly capable of  based on past performance and it also gives HR another chance to ensure compatibility with the company culture.

The final part of the process is a two week trial period, if and when possible. This serves as the best way to see if the candidate truly fits with the company culture since they will be interacting directly with their potential colleagues.

Combined with the intuition of the HR representative, this process serves as a great foundation for recruiting compatible A list employees!  Even though the company as a whole is priority, it must have a strong employee foundation to ensure success.  This recruiting process is a great way to build that foundation.

Plastic Surgery For Bullied Kids: Overboard or not?

Hey fatso! Four-eyes!” We’ve all heard name-calling in school whether indirectly or directly. Sadly bullying is very prominent in many schools and affects many people’s self-esteem  even through adulthood. I came across this video about plastic surgery for bullied kids. In my opinion, it is really horrible that any kid has to resort to that instead of loving themself or being accepted for who they are. This story is about 14-year old Nadia Ilse who, with her mother’s approval, had surgery done to her ears, nose, and chin. An organization called Little Baby Face Foundation funded her surgery which costed about $40,000.

I understand the medical use for plastic surgery and think the Little Baby Face Foundation is a wonderful and generous organization for kids with severe cases. If you check out their website, you will see pictures some unfortunate deformities.  All the while, unnecessary cosmetic use is a bit extreme. The fact Nadia didn’t have counseling first and still hasn’t afterwards makes me wonder if would she still have gone through with it if she did receive it. Bullying affect the victims more psychologically.  She is looking forward to starting the school year as a freshman without being called Dumbo. I truly hope that while she has changed her outside appearance, she grows inside to be a better and more confident woman.

Department Tip of the Week: CPE

In addition to our already sterling Continuing Legal Education (CLE) course library, Lawline has recently begun developing its Continuing Professional Education (CPE) courses for accountants, enrolled agents (EA) and registered tax return preparers (RTRP).
Our CPE department has been feverishly adding courses each week, but it’s important for Lawline as well as it’s potential audiences to know the important basics of CPE.  This week, the CPE department will help explain the differences between the many types of professionals that are required to take CPE credits across the country.

1.  RTRP.  All tax preparers who are paid to prepare tax returns are subject to the RTRP requirements.  Attorneys, Certified Public Accountants, and Enrolled Agents are generally exempt.
2.  EA. An EA is a person who has earned the right of representing taxpayers before the Internal Revenue Service
3.  CPA. A Certified Public Accountant is an individual who has graduated from a post-secondary learning institution with a degree in accounting.

When booking and presenting CPE courses it’s important to keep these factors in mind since different classes cater to different professionals.

Lawline Goes Juice Cleanse Crazy

Just 2 weeks and 5 pounds ago, a group of Lawline employees made the commitment. The commitment to cleanse! In an effort to jump start a healthier lifestyle, 8 Lawliners embarked on a 3 day juice cleanse, the Blue Print Cleanse.

The Blue Print Cleanse, consists of 6 difference juices which are drank periodically throughout the day.  The juices range from a green mixture with kale, spinach and apple to a spicy lemonade with lemon and cayenne pepper.

But why torture yourself with a liquid diet? Great question.

“I thought it would be a great mental challenge …  I thought it may also help to give me perspective as to how much your body actually needs in order to survive,” said Frank Furbacher, Vice President of Operations.

For many “juicers” this cleanse was a jump start to a healthier lifestyle.  Whether it be cutting our carbohydrates, soda or sugars in general, the juice cleanse helped many of us realize what we do and don’t need in our daily eating regiment.

The second and third day were definitely the hardest, but going through this experience as a Lawline team not only helped us complete the cleanse but demonstrated how supportive and helpful Lawline team members really are.

Everyone made it through with no mishaps! Our mental strength and health reached a new level, thanks to everyone’s support.

2012 Best Companies to Work for in New York!

I am pleased to announce that Lawline has made the list for the 2012 Best Companies to Work for in New York State.  Last year we were nominated by Crain’s, where as this year it is by the New York State Society for Human Resource Management.  Lawline is proud to start a new tradition of such an award.

On April 26, 2012 a ceremony will be held in Albany, New York where all companies awarded will gather for a night of honor and celebration of this accomplishment.  As a small company prospective, Lawline was required for each employee to fill out a survey.  This survey gave the NYSSHRM a true picture not only of the individual employees but their view and impression of Lawline as an entire company.  It’s safe to say that Lawline loves its employees and its employees love Lawline back.
